                                                      By Sandra Bush Brown

William Prescott Bush was born Dec 12, 1825 in Edgefield District, SC and died October 9, 1898 in Springhill, Butler Co AL where he is buried in the East Antioch Baptist Cemetery. He was the oldest son of John Bush Sr and Frances "Fannie" Johnson of Edgefield and Barnwell SC. William and his parents and grandparents moved about 1832 to Stewart Co Georgia where his grandfather, Prescott Bush, started the Poplar Springs Baptist Church in what later became Webster Co GA.

After Williams grandfather Prescott passed away, William followed his parents and siblings to Russell Co AL where he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Turner on February 3, 1845, the daughter of Abraham Turner and Judith Boddie from Edgefield, South Carolina. Betsy was born about 1830 in SC; she was the sister to William D Turner who married William Prescott Bushs sister Elcy Ann Bush. Sometime after 1850 William moved to Butler Co AL and settled around the Mt Olive East Baptist Church with his family. William bought 300 acres just west of Pigeon Creek on November 1, 1858 and later near Springhill. He was an active member in the Antioch East Church and is buried in the cemetery. William enlisted in the Civil War on August 16, 1864 at the age of 40. He was a 3rd Corporal in the Home Guard of Grey Thigpen's Unit.

Williams's first wife, Betsy Bush, died before 1880 and William married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Blackmon, the widow of Burrell Blackmon of Dale County, AL. Elizabeth died June 1898.

Obit-Greenville: Oct 17 1898

Mr W.P. Bush prominent farmer who lived four or five miles north of this city, died at his home on the 9 inst. He had been in bed but a few days, and no one seemed to think that the end was near. A Negro woman, the cook, was out of the house and heard him fall, and went in, and with the assistance of Mr. Bush's little grandson got him on the bed, and applied hot applications to him as he complained of feeling cold. She sent for some of the neighbors, when they arrived he was unconscious and soon died. The deceased was suffering from cancer of the face, and it may have been that which hastened the end, though for several days he was suffering from chills.
