The families of the children of Peter Cheatham and Melinda Holmes
will be given in this chapter. Peter Cheatham was the sixth
child born to Guttridge and Elizabeth Cheatham.
6. Peter Cheatham married Melinda Holmes of Twiggs County Georgia. They lived in the Fort Dale area and they are buried at Fort Dale Cemetery. Peter Cheatham purchased land in the following sections in Butler and Wilcox counties from the U.S. Land Office: section 3 TS 11N and Range 11E on 7/6/1829 (Wilcox Co.), section 35 TS 12N and Range 11E on 6/4/1833 (Wilcox Co.) section 4 TS 11N and Range 15E on 5/19/1831 (Butler Co.), section 15 TS 11N and Range 14 E on 10/10/1840. Peter Cheatham was a member of Fort Dale Baptist Church. See September 18, 1863 of Moriah Church Records. Peter was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina, on October 20, 1805 and died September 15, 1867. Melinda was born November 20, 1810 in Twiggs Co., Ga. and died November 12, 1862.
The father of Melinda Holmes could be James Holmes. James
Holmes (Homes) first purchased land in section 17, TS 11, R 14 in
1825. This land was about two miles west of the land given above
that was purchased by Peter Cheatham. Also, the land was
about two miles northwest of Fort Dale. Other land
purchases by James Holmes in Butler County were in section 34, TS
11, R 14; section 15, TS 10, R 14; section 33, TS 11, R 14;
section 28, TS 11, R 14 and section 33, TS 11, R 14. Sections
28, 33 and 34, TS 11, R 14 are in the Manningham Community.
Since Peter Cheatham and Melinda Holmes had a son named Guttridge
James Cheatham (or James Guttridge Cheatham), I believe that
James Holmes was the father of Melinda Holmes. It was a
common practice to name a son by using the names of its
grandfathers.
The children of Peter and Melinda Cheatham were:
6. 1. William
H. Cheatham b. April 1834, d. 11/7/1906, and m. 1st
