I found this article when cleaning out my Aunt's house that recently passed away. I am not certain what paper it was originally printed in; but the title on the paper was "Liberty Homemakers Club Holds Annual Picnic Meet by Mrs. Aubrey C Cheatham, Community Reporter." Susan Abigail Armstrong Cheatham was my gggrandmother.SUSAN ABIGAIL ARMSTRONG CHEATHAM
Susan Abigail Armstrong married William Alexander Cheatham. She was born March 12, 1821, died December 28, 1916. Her widow's Confederate pension application gives her birthplace as Manningham. Her parents were Charley and Amanda Bradley Armstrong, who came to Butler County from Autauga County, Alabama. Of this union were born three children: John Wesley Armstrong; Polly, who married Anderson Seale, and Susan. Amanda died and Charley Armstrong married again (wife's name unknown), and to this union were born: Peter, James, Jim, Bettie, Mandy, George and possibly more. (Charley moved to Montgomery County with his second wife.)
William Alexander Cheatham, Susan's husband, a Confederate captain, was taken prisoner at the Battle of Nashville, and died in prison at Camp Douglas, Ill. (Details of the battle and his military records are published in "The History of Reddock Springs (Liberty), Butler County, Alabama.")
The obituary on Mrs. Susan Cheatham, printed at the time of her death states that she died at the home of her son, the Rev, E.P. Cheatham, and interment was made at Liberty Methodist Church, with the Rev. E.M. Rooks, of Forest Home, officiating. She was 96 years old at the time of her death and during her life enjoyed remarkable health, never having worn spectacles at all. "An old and greatly loved woman has gone to her reward (under caption "Pioneer Called"). Genial and untiring in works of love, she gained and held the affection of those who came in contact with her.
This was the mother of George Daniel Cheatham (sometimes called George Giles), who went to Indian Territory and was lost track of; Rev. E.P. Cheatham, Messrs. Ezra R. and Eldridge W Cheatham.
