The Sheldrake Kendrick Family of Butler & Conecuh County, Alabama

Sheldrake Kendrick
Born 21 Jun 1803
Died 21 May 1879 

Sheldrake Kendrick was the first child of born in Columbia County, Georgia. He was the first born son of Robert Kendrick and Mary Slaid . Some records say that Robert Kendrick was a veteran of the Seminole Wars of 1817-1818 in Capt. James Hendon's Co. of Georgia. Robert and Mary were in Georgia until around the year of 1815 then moving to Alabama. Their third child, a son Robert William Kendrick was born in Alabama in 1815. They came to the Butler/Conecuh County area to settle. They are in the 1820 Conecuh County, Census.

Family legend says that Sheldrake ran a store out of his home near Garland, Alabama.
He died in Conecuh County. They buried him in Conecuh Methodist Church Cemetery in Conecuh County. 

Other family traditions say that Wiley Artis Kendrick, Sheldrake's youngest son,
inherited Sheldrake's house nearGarland. Wiley leased this home to Lon Williams (the father of Georgiana, Alabama native, Hank Williams, Sr.) and moved to Jay, Florida, 

Sheldrake Kendrick was married two times. His first wife was:

Sheldrake married Anna Parker about 1828, probably in Conecuh County, Alabama .
Anna was a native of Conecuh County and died there. They had 9 children together.

Anna (Parker) Kendrick died sometime after the birth of James Wesley Kendrick in 1844. We do not know if she died in childbirth, or some other illness of that time.
Anna's burial place is unknown, After Ann's death, Sheldrake took a second wife.

Sheldrake married Leney Skinner about 1846. Leney was also, like Anna Parker, a native of Conecuh County. Leney was the daughter of John Nathan Skinner and Sarah Brason and granddaughter of the older John Skinner. Sheldrake and Leney had eight children.
These children were:

After the death of Sheldrake in 1879, Leney lived in the area for a few years.
She is on the 1880 census of Conecuh County as the head of household, with a few of
her younger children in the household. Her unmarried sister-in-law Polly Kendrick
(b. 1817) is living in the household with her and some of the younger children. Polly was the only sister of her husband Sheldrake. 

On 2 Aug 1882 in Conech County, Lenny took a second husband, L. Hobbs. Some of Leney's grandchildren by Sheldrake would call this man "Father Hobbs" or "Grandfather Hobbs." Leney and her second husband moved from Conecuh County to Escambia County, Florida to the Byrneville Community. Leney's daughter Lucinda (Lou) Catherine Kendrick would follow them and marry John Andrew Gilmore of that area. Leney died in Byrneville, Florida. She is buried there at the Byrneville Methodist Church Cemetery. 

The Byrneville community (in Escambia County, Florida) was founded in 1860 by Robert "Bob" Kendrick and wife, Martha (Fuller) Kendrick. Robert Kendrick was a younger brother of Sheldrake Kendrick.

Martha Ann (Kendrick) Adair and Frances (Kendrick) Gilmore, sisters, ended up in Byrneville also.They are buried in the same cemetery as their mother and sister Lucinda (Lou)

Sarah Lane (Kendrick) and Alex Bennett lived in Butler County. They were charter members of the Mt. Olive West Baptist Church in Butler County. The rest of her siblings would remain in Butler and Conecuh County. Sterling Ramsey Kendrick resided in Montery. 

William Ashley (Bill), Asa, Sheldrake, James Wesley, and Wiley Artis with their wives
and children lived near Garland. Wiley Artis moved on to Jay, Florida then to
Robertsdale, Alabama (Baldwin County). 

William (Bill) Ashley Kendrick married Martha Josephine Cook around 1872 in Conecuh County. No marriage record has been found. Martha was the daughter of Judge Samuel Wiles Cook and Martha Jane Whitehead of Conecuh County. Martha was born 21 Mar 1851 and died 28 Jan 1931. Both are buried at Concord Methodist Church Cemetery in Conecuh County. They had 9 children.

Jeanie & Dave Kelly resided in Byrneville, Florida with numerous others that were kin to her. 

William Asa & James Irvin Kendrick and their wives and children all resided within Conecuh County. 

John Richard Kendrick and his wife and children resided near Garland, in Butler County. 

The other two daughters, Sudie Mae & Willie Jane resided in Escambia County, Alabama at the time of their deaths. Sudie Mae and Hub Jones also resided in Geogiana, Conecuh County, and Atmore, Alabama where they both died.

In the middle of this picture is Martha Josephine Cook (seated), wife of William Ashley Kendrick and daughter-in-law of Sheldrake Kendrick and Laney Skinner.  Around her are her children: Alice Eugenia Kendrick, John Richard Kendrick, Sudie Mae Kendrick, William Asa Kendrick, James Irvin Kendrick, and Willie Jane Kendrick. The photo is exceedingly old and background was torn away leaving on the the immediate family.
Lucinda "Lou" Catherine Kendrick and husband John Andrew Gilmore.  She was the daughter of Sheldrake Kendrick and Leney Skinner.
