Sophia THOMPSON (Samuel, George) was born about 1787 in Georgia. She died after 1850 in Cherokee County, Texas.

Joseph SHIPP married Sophia THOMPSON before 1808 in Kentucky.  Joseph was born about 1785 in Kentucky.  He died in 1849 in Cherokee County, Texas.  Will dated 13 March 1849, proved May 1849, Cherokee County.

Joseph was born and raised in Kentucky.  He and Sophia Thompson were married there (probably in Warren County) in about 1807.  There was a Joseph Ship, his wife, and a young son and daughter in Caldwell County in 1810.  His first three children were born in Kentucky.  He moved to the Mississippi Territory of Alabama in 1815 or 1816.  It is probable that they lived close to Sophia's family in Huntsville in Madison County.  His last six children were born in Alabama.  He moved to the San Augustine Municipality in the Mexican territory of Texas in about 1830.  He is listed as Joseph Ship in the 1835 Sabine District census.  He served in Captain William D. Ratliff's militia company in the Texas Revolutionary War.  He received a first class head-right grant of a league and a labor of land in what is now San Augustine County (San Augustine Abstract 41).

[Note: A first class head-right was issued to those who arrived before March 2, 1836.  Heads of families received one league (4,428 acres) and one labor (177.1 acres) of land.]

The following passages are from page 628 of "The Shipp Family Genealogy" by Ralph D. Shipp:

"Joseph Shipp, b. ca. 1785, Ky(?); d. between 1840 and 1850, TX; m. Sophia _____ , b. ca. 1788, GA; d. after 1850, TX."
and
"Joseph lived Sabine Dist., TX (Menico) [sic] 1835, owned 7 slaves and a wood clock in 1840;  was granted a "league & a labor" of land (Spanish land measures) by Mexico and cattle brand "HY".  Land lay in San Augustine Co., TX."

AR.  Isabella married George Iva DEAS about 1830 in Alabama.  George was born in 1801 in South Carolina.  He died in 1872 in Texas.  Their children were:

1) Martha Jane DEAS;
2) Sophia A. DEAS (1830-1856) married Nathaniel HYDEN (1815-1875);

Ratliff's Company in the Texas Revolutionary War.  He is listed in the 1850 Cherokee County, Texas census as James Ship.  His brother-in-law Ferrel Allen (born about 1813 in Alabama) lived in his household, and his mother Sophia and his brother Joseph lived next door.

James married (1) Anna ALLEN on 27 Sep 1838 in San Augustine County, Texas.  Anna was born about 1821 in Alabama.  She died before 1849 (she was mentioned in Joseph's will, as Ann) in Cherokee County, Texas.  James also married (2)Ann WALTERS, d/o Andrew C. Walters.  She died 20 Oct 1851.  James married (3) Susan MAY, and married (4) Mrs. Delphiann Mariah HARTSFIELD MILLER.  Delphiann was born on 30 Aug 1831 in North Carolina.  She died in 1903 in Timpson, Texas.

5.) Harriet SHIPP was born about 1816 in Alabama.  She died after 1884 in Marlin, Falls, Texas, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery.

Harriet is identified as the daughter of Joseph and Sophia (Thompson) Shipp in the Robert Wyres biography in "Families Of Falls County."  The fact that one of her grandsons was named Joseph Shipp Wyres is the conclusive link to her father.

Harriet married Robert WYRES about 1830 in Texas.  Robert was born about 1810 in Virginia.  He died after 1880 in Marlin, Falls, Texas, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery.

Robert Wyres came from Virginia to the Mexican territory of Texas in 1830.  He settled in the Municipality of San Augustine in the area that is now the east Texas counties of San Augustine and Sabine.  His occupation was listed as "mechanic" in the 1835 census.  He received a first class head-right (a land grant issued to those who arrived before March 2, 1836) in 1833.  He was listed as "head of household", which establishes that he and Harriet Shipp were married by then.  Heads of families received a league (4,428 acres) and a labor (177.1 acres) of land.  He received another 640 acres in 1837 as an assignee of Tomison Taylor (First Settlers of Sabine County, Texas, Gifford White).  He served with the Texas Army and fought in the Battle of San Jacinto, where he was wounded (Families of Falls County).  He died in Marlin and is buried in Calvary Cemetery.

6) Sarah SHIPP was born about 1819 in Alabama, married Jackson WILLIAMS and they lived in San Augustine County when Joseph died and gave power of attorney to William Shipp to sign for their part.

7) Eliza Jane SHIPP was born about 1821 in Alabama.  She died about 1848 in Anderson County, Texas.  She married Jesse ALLEN (b. 24 March 1811, in Alabama), most likely in San Augustine County, ca 1838.  Jesse ALLEN received a guardianship of children Martha J, Sophia Ann, Temperance D, Elisha P and Napoleon through their mother, Eliza J, deceased.

8) Sophia Ann SHIPP was born about 1823 in Alabama.  She died before 25 May 1847 in San Augustine County, Texas.

Sophia married Nathaniel HYDEN about 1836 in San Augustine County, Texas.  Nathaniel was born about 1813.  Nathaniel is listed in the 1835 Sabine District census as Nathaniel Hintons (22).  He is listed adjacent to the Ship [sic] and Williams families.

9) Joseph Washington SHIPP was born about 1824 in Alabama.  He was listed as a "lunatic" and provisions were made for him in Joseph's will.

10) Tempka SHIPP was born about 1826 in Alabama.

In settling JOSEPH SHIPP's Estate, there were 11 slaves named, 18 sheep, 30 Cattle, 5 oxen, a jenny, 2 mules, a horse, a wagon, farming tools, household and kitchen furniture, etc.  The will provided that the whole estate belong to his widow in her lifetime, then to be divided equally among the children, with son Washington to be supported out of property along with his widow.  After expenses, each heir was to receive $755.95 1/9th share.

This will is not found in a minute book and not in loose papers, but on a little scrap of paper in Jan 1996.  (Thanks to Alton BLEVINS For this information)
