1.  JAMES1 POPE was born Abt. 1795 in North Carolina, and died Bef. 1860 in Polk Co., Arkansas.  He married MARY C. SPENCER in North Carolina.  She was born Abt. 1800 in North Carolina, and died Aft. 1880 in Polk Co., Arkansas.

 

Notes for MARY C. SPENCER:

Mary Spencer was full blooded cherokee.  They married in North Carolina, moved to Tennesse, and were living there in 1834 when James was born and still there in 1838 when Alexander was born.  They were living in Arkansas by 1840 when Layfayette was born.  In 1860, James, the father has died, and it most likely buried in Polk County.  By this time, they are living in Montgomery Co., Arkansas.  In 1880 census Mary is listed as a widow, 80 years old.  Alexander is 45, still single, and farming.

2.  JAMES2 POPE (JAMES1) was born December 25, 1834 in Tennessee, and died 1903 in Montgomery Co., Arkansas.  He married (1) HARRIET CAMPBELL August 16, 1855.    He married (2) CYNTHIA JANE CUNNINGHAM January 25, 1866.  She was born 1841, and died 1923.

4.  LAYFAYETTE2 POPE (JAMES1) was born May 31, 1840 in Sevier Co., Arkansas, and died February 05, 1908 in Lowndes Co., AL.  He married (1) ALICE BLALOCK.    He married (2) ELIZABETH TILL Abt. 1863 in Lowndes Co., AL, daughter of JOHN TILL and MARTHA ARRANT.  She was born January 18, 1844 in Sevier Co., Arkansas, and died January 12, 1901 in Lowndes Co., AL.

 

Notes for LAYFAYETTE POPE:

Layfayette Pope was mustered into the CSA at Fort Smith, Arkansas on October 26, 1861 for 12 months service.  He was enrolled on 10-31-1862 at Fort Smith by Major G.W. Clark.  In June of 1882 he was promoted from Corporal to 2nd Lieutenant.  He was named Sergeant of the month on June 30, 1862.  He was in the hospital on October 31, 1862.  He was absent of furlough during the month of December, 1862 and signed the roll of Candy Company from December 31 until February 28, 1863.  On August 25 he was stationed in Gainsville, AL as Conscript Officer.  Gainsville is west of Selma.  On January 25, 1864 he was listed as being on detached duty from McNair's Brigade.  While on detached duty he traveled through south Alabama recruiting men for the army.  That was beginning in August of 1863 and it was during these months that he met, wooed and married Elizabeth Till Covey.  Elizabeth was only 20 at the time but had already been married.  Covey was also in the CSA and may have been killed.  In 1864, he was in Griffin, GA and served the 4th Regiment.  On April 26, 1865 the 4th Reg. surrendered at Durham Station, North Carolina.

Notes for HAMPTON JEFFERSON POPE:

An epidemic of typhoid fever struck the region of Macedonia and Charlie Jenkins Pope died in 1902, when Clyde was a little over 1 year old.  Jeff moved to Wildfork in Butler Co.  Jeff married Mary Elizabeth Gaston.  Mary Elizabeth died in 1939 and was buried in Brushy Creek.  Jeff married for the third time, Molly Black.  He died by his own hands on March 18, 1940.  Hampton Jefferson was buried beside his second wife in Brushy Creek.  Jeff was a very successful farmer in Wildfork.  He invented a machine to capture boll weavers.  He was also one of the first to own an automobile.  He built and lived in one of the finest houses in Wildfork.  He often took in boarders.

Notes for CHARLIE JENKINS:

Charlie Jenkins father was a traveling peddler.  They were traveling through the area and either became sick of the fever (yellow or typhoid) or they were killed.  Charlie and perhaps a brother were orphans and were take in by an African American family.  This family buried the parents.  John Till, the father of Elizabeth Till, the wife of Layfayette Pope, took her or them home to raise.  This would haveen after 1870, the year Charlie was born.  Jeff met Charlie visiting his grandparents home.
