Notes:  Probably the relatives she writes of are the children of the siblings of William Porter Shine. Brice is an old Shine family name, going all of the way back to North Carolina. Clarissa Williams’ (William Porter’s grandmother) mother was a Brice. One of William Porter Shine’s brothers was named Daniel Brice Shine, but he moved to Texas (San Jacinto county) in 1850. Sallie is possibly a daughter of Sallie Shine Brook, sister of Susan Brooks. These two Shine sisters (daughters of James W. Shine Jr., brother to William Porter) married two Brook brothers.

The gossip on page 3 is interesting! However, Dr. Shine was a man of impeccable morals, and this would not have been in character with any thing he did in his life. I do not believe this gossip had any truth to it. However, it is interesting to note that the Shines were related to the Stallings through the sisters listed above (Susan and Sallie’s mother was a Stalling).

Rube Brogden and the Stallings told a fine lie on Bro Hix but I think that very few sensible people will give it any credit whatever Rube said that Bro Hix kept the money that he collected on the train for that lady with the sick children and besides that he stoled (sic) a cow in Brazos Co. and that was why he left there.  We all feel very indignant over the matter and want Bro Hix to write to the lady and have her send a receipt for the money to Rube Brogden & old Mrs Nora Stallings.  Mama has Texas fever bad says She thinks she must go next fall or if she gets ten cents for her cotton she is going next may.  Papa is not doing as well as he was
