Notes:  Balaam Bates married Mary Seale (daughter of pioneer James and Rachel Seale).  They had a daughter named Rachel Bates, who married Simon Kern (emigrated from Germany in 1840).  Their daughter was Laduska Kern, who married Dr. Uriah Hix Shine, son of William Porter Shine and Martha Hammond Shine.

Edith Bates and Laduska (nicknamed Duck, or Duckie by her cousins and other relatives) are cousins.  These letters are written from and to addresses in Texas, but they speak of Butler county ancestors.

Thank you so much for the information.

Love
