Miss Ida Kern Dies After Lengthy Illness
Greenville lost one of her most beloved and most useful citizens when Miss Ida Eugenia
Kern, 76, died Tuesday night after a lengthy illness.
Miss Kern had been a nurse for a number of years and had been of great assistance in
many homes in the city and county and in surrounding counties in times of stress, aiding the physicians
in relieving suffering. She also had nursed members of her own family through illnesses, and
"Aunt Ida" was called on on many occasions, and always responded gladly. Her whole life was one
of service to others, and to her church. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church and
an active member of the Eastern Star.
She was born in Butler County, February 14, 1867. Her father was the late Simon
Kern, a native of the German Rhineland. Her mother was Mrs Rachael Elizabeth Bates Kern, a native
of Lowndes County, Alabama. After the death of Mr Kern many years ago, she resided with her
mother. For the past quarter of a century she had lived with her sister, Mrs J M Haygood.
Surviving are two brothers, Will Kern, Greenville, and Abe Kern, Troy; two sisters,
Mrs S D Cowart, and Mrs J M Haygood, Greenville, and a large number of nieces and nephews and grand-nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held from the home of Mr and Mrs Haygood at four o'clock Wednesday
afternoon, with the Rev Joseph Avery, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial in
Magnolia cemetery, with Dunklin and Johnson directing.
The active pallbearers were her nephews: Zollie Cowart, Cecil Cowart, Leo Kern,
Dr James Haygood, Albert Kern, LaMont Glass, Bernard Haygood and G C Steindorff.
