One of the main things I wanted to discover was what happened to Mary H (Polly)
Franklin, daughter of Mark (Martin) Franklin & Nancy Ann Stapleton. Mary H
married W Henry Burkett, son of Thomas Burkett & Rachel Herrington, abt 1850
in Butler Co.
W Henry Burkett died 30 Nov 1864 at the Battle of Franklin (TN) and I'd always wondered what happened to Mary after he died (besides the fact that she had 2 extra children after his death). She's a fascinating lady to me. We didn't know if she'd married & moved away, died, or what. The following images were taken from the Confederate Soldiers & Widows Book, Probate Court (2nd floor), Greenville, Butler Co, AL. There are 17 in all relating to her & they prove that Mary H (Polly) Franklin Burkett never remarried and that she did, indeed, get a widow's pension after W. Henry was killed. With the exception of 1889, all are 2 pages per year. The "A" page is on the left hand side of the book and lists her name. The "B" page is on the right hand side of the book & shows where she signed to receive her yearly pension. Now all we have to do is locate her on census records! Note from web manager: Each of these documents is about 100KB and will take considerable time to load if you have a slow connection. However, other researchers will be interested in them for the other names contained on each page. Click each page to enlarge. |
