Notes:
Information Sources:
1Thomas Hutchinson’s grandson, John Herbert Hutchinson, gave his version of his family history at his 90th birthday celebration as reported in his obituary published in the Houston Chronicle, Vol. 26, No. 253, Thursday, June 23, 1927.

2The Wade Family Bible located at the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) contains a list of the children of Thomas and Mary Hutchinson.  Their first child recorded there was born 7 April 1783.  That child’s name is difficult to read from the photocopy I have, but it appears to be Vinson or Winson Harell???(a son).

3Thomas Hutchinson made his will 31 October 1818, and died the next day.  His probate package is found in Box No. 16, Package No. 389 of the Richland County, SC Probate Court, as obtained from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.  The will itself was recorded in Record Book G, page 86 ff. in Richland County, SC.  Burrell Brown Hutchinson appeared before the Probate Court to request that his mother, Mary Hutchinson be named his guardian, and at that time Burrell stated that his father, Thomas Hutchinson died on 1 November 1818.

4Although I have never found a document clearly stating that Mary Hutchinson’s maiden name was Cook, a strong circumstantial argument for that conclusion can be made.  Thomas and Mary Hutchinson lived in Richland County, SC, while the Cook family lived in Fairfield County, yet Thomas Hutchinson conducted much of his business with the Cooks.  The two families witnessed for each other.  John Cook was married to Betty Brown, daughter of Burrell Brown.  Thomas Hutchinson administered the estate of Burrell Cook, decd., and went to court to fight one of Burrell’s daughters for the guardianship of Burrell’s minor children.  The contacts go on and on.  Anyone interested may contact me for specific details.

5John Cook and Betty Brown took out a marriage bond in Brunswick County, VA on 27 September 1759.  At that time, John Cook was under 21, and his father, Henry Cook, gave permission for him to marry. Various wills from Brunswick County, VA prove that the marriage actually took place, and the couple’s son, Burrell Cook was born before 3 February 1762 (will of Mary Urvin Brown Wall, Burrell Cook’s grandmother).  Daughters Sarah and Mary were born after that time.

6Mary Hutchinson married a man named Herbert by 22 September 1821 from BLM Old Tract Book Patent Entry records, page 138 for Butler County, AL, and while there is no one single document that proves her husband was John, a strong circumstantial case can be made for this assertion.  John Herbert had land adjacent to Mary and Burrell Brown Hutchinson as early as 1817.  John Herbert moved to Butler County by about 1818 from Jones County, GA.  John Herbert was married to Sarah Cook (died before 1806 in Hancock County, GA), Mary’s sister, and he was the only Herbert male living in the area who was of an age to have married Mary.  When John Herbert died (by 8 November 1826 from notice of administration printed in the Alabama Journal, Montgomery, AL Vol. II, No. 3 Friday, November 17, 1826), Mary’s son Burrell Brown Hutchinson, along with John’s son Thomas Herbert, acted as administrators of John’s estate.  Burrell also married John Herbert’s daughter, Amanda M. F. Herbert, whom John had with his second wife, Delitha Stanton? Tyson (widow of Job Tyson).  Burrell and Amanda named their first son John Herbert Hutchinson.  I can provide more details to anyone who might be interested.

7All children of Mary and Thomas Hutchinson, as well as their dates of birth are from the Wade Family Bible located at ADAH.  Spouses of Rebecca and Mary H. Hutchinson are from the will of Thomas Hutchinson (see above).  Spouse of Burrell Brown Hutchinson from various sources including wills of both Amanda and Burrell filed in Washington County, TX, death certificate of John Herbert Hutchinson, filed in Austin, Texas, census records of Washington County, Texas, and others.  I can provide details to anyone who might be interested.
