Family of Allen Page
Generation No. 1
1. Allen3 Page (Jacob2, John1) was born Abt. 1804 in Georgia, and died 10 Nov 1859 near Fork Sepulga, Conecuh Co, AL (Source: History of Conecuh County by Rev. B. F. Riley.). He married Sarah A. Wright, daughter of David Wright and Eunice Pierce. She was born Abt. 1810 in SC (Source: 1860 Conecuh County, AL Census.), and died 1889 in Conecuh Co, AL (Source: Kay Anderson of Monroe County, AL)
Notes for Allen Page: Allen Page was shot and killed in November 1859 by two neighbors , the Ward Brothers (Irvin and Stephen), who were hanged on 18 Nov 1859 for his murder. The Ward brothers were buried at Ward-Witherington Cemetery at Fork Sepulga (T. 7, R 11, Section 10), located east of Bowles Church, about 12 miles from Evergreen (off Hwy 83). Their graves lie North/South and not facing East, as was the custom.
From Eugenia Ellis on 15 March 2001: "Yes, it was Allen Page who was killed by the Ward Brothers. He and John Wright, Sr. (Page's brother in law) had carried their cotton to Claiborne to sell. They were on their way home and almost there when they were shot. Allen Page was killed, but few shots penetrated Mr. Wright's clothing. His clothes 'took a beating' according to Rev. Riley's 'History of Conecuh County'. Locals built a rude gallows over the spot where the deed happened and there they were hanged. They sent for the sheriff, but he was busy and could not come. The ropes were "adjusted" by Patrick D. Page and William Wright (sons of Allen Page and John Wright). They swung at 1 oclock, on Friday, 18th November 1859."
Allen Page (son of Jacob Page) and his wife Sarah Wright, owned the largest cotton plantation in Conecuh County prior to the Civil War. The 10,000 acre Page Estate, located in the community called "Fork Sepulga", extended into Butler County. After Allen Page was killed in 1859, his son, Kinchen Page, assumed responsibility for management of the family cotton plantation. Kinchen managed the plantation from the time of his father's death until the onset of the Civil War that marked the end of prosperity for the Allen Page family. When Federal troops marched into Conecuh County, killing all those who resisted, they burned the courthouse and other public buildings at Sparta. The occupying Yankee troops took over the Page Plantation and transformed it into their field military headquarters until the end of the war.

From Marsena Hawk-Smith on 16 March 2001: "Allen Page was a half brother of Curtis Page. Their father, Jacob Page, was first married to a woman whose last name was Raiford. (We've never been able to find her first name.) She died soon after they were married having had only two children; Allen and Temperance. Jacob then married a widow, Priscilla (May) Barber. They had about nine or ten children which included my grandfather, Curtis Page. The whole family, including Allen and Temperance, moved from Jefferson County, Georgia, to Conecuh County, Alabama, at about the same time the Witherington family moved from Louisiana to Conecuh County (about 1820).

From John Buford Page on 18 June 2004: "Allen PAGE (b.1805-GA)(d.1859-AL) was first buried in the Concord Methodist Church Cemetery but was later moved to the Old Evergreen Cemetery beside his wife, Sarah (WRIGHT) PAGE. Their surviving children purchased a large family plot where they placed Allen & Sarah together, along with other members of the Allen PAGE family. A memorial monument now stands there in the Evergreen City Cemetery to mark the Allen PAGE plots."

From John Buford Page: "Bill... Some of the data in my book EARLY PAGE FAMILIES (page 59), describing the execution of the WARD brothers, was taken from an interview I had with, Sarah (PAGE) HAMILTON in Montgomery in 1987. Sarah was a granddaughter of Haskew and Laura PAGE and she had heard the details of the tragic event told to her by her grandparents who were among the 40 eyewitnesses present at the execution. Sarah (90 years of age when I met with her in 1987), also gave me detailed information, about the period during the Civil War, that her grandmother had described about the Yankee troop occupation of the PAGE Plantation as their headquarters. John"
