WILLIAM H. STUART was born a twin with JOHN D. STUART in January 1800
in Mecklenberg Co., North Carolina. He was the son of JAMES STUART
and MARY MATTHEWS. They were the third and fourth children born of a
family of 12. William came with his family to Alabama in about 1815/1816,
and settled in the area that would become Wilcox County, near Ackerville.
William married REBECCA A. CARNES in 1830. He bought land in south Butler
County from about 1836 to 1855. He farmed cotton while raising a family
that totaled 14 children. Although he moved his family to Butler County
in the late 1840s, they were not listed on the federal census of 1850.
During the Civil War, all 4 of his sons who were old enough to fight went
off to war for the Confederacy. William died in April 1865 in Butler
County, aged 65. This article is a memorial to an early Alabama pioneer.

North Carolina, and died in April 1865 in Butler Co., Alabama. He is the son
of JAMES STUART and MARY MATTHEWS of Mecklenberg Co., North Carolina, and a
twin brother to JOHN DOAK STUART. He married REBECCA ANNE CARNES on 28 June
1830, in Wilcox Co., Alabama. She is the daughter of FREDERICK CARNES and
REBECCA UNKNOWN, of the Orangeburg District, South Carolina.

2. WAYMAN ADER STUART was born on 8 September 1831, in Wilcox Co., Alabama, and died
after 1910 in Butler Co., Alabama. He married on 22 December 1853 ANN LOUIZA SKINNER,
daughter of the Reverend ASA SKINNER, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Greenville.
She was born on 18 November 1827, in South Carolina, and died on 30 March 1902 in Butler
Co., Alabama. WAYMAN ADER STUART was with Co. E, 56th Alabama Partisan Rangers during
the Civil War.

3. WILLIAM DAVID STUART was born on 24 April 1836 in Wilcox Co., Alabama,
and died on 24 June 1924 in Brookwood, Alabama. He married three times.
His first marriage was on 13 October 1864 to FRANCES V. PALMER(PALMORE),
born on 8 December 1844, and died on 6 August 1869. Second, he married on
10 November 1869 in Butler Co. to JANE WINN. It is reported that they moved
to Texas in 1882, but JANE died, and WILLIAM returned to Alabama and married
again. His third marriage was on 14 December 1888 in Centerville, Bibb Co.,
Alabama, to MARTHA ELLEN WATTS. She was born on 26 June 1848 and died on
26 November 1923. WILLIAM DAVID STUART was with Co. B, 17th Alabama Infantry
Regiment during the Civil War. He received the Southern Cross of Honor for
his service.

General Notes:
1. It is important to note that the two brothers who brought their
families to Alabama in 1815/1816 from North Carolina, JAMES STUART
and WILLIAM HUSTON STUART, both had a son named after themselves,
and one named after their brother. This creates some confusion
when during the 1820s and 1830s, records show JAMES STUART had a
son named WILLIAM HUSTON STUART, the focus of this article. JAMES'
brother WILLIAM HUSTON STUART, who died in 1834 in Wilcox County,
had a son named WILLIAM HUSTON STUART, Jr., birth year unknown, who
died in 1837 in Wilcox County.
2. WILLIAM H. STUART and his family are not listed on either
U.S. Census for Wilcox or Butler Counties for 1840 or 1850. Other
records such as bible records, land records, marriage records and
excerpts from probate records have enabled researchers to determine
that they lived in Wilcox County until about 1848, in which they
moved to Butler County. Land records show that WILLIAM H. STUART
had been buying land in south Butler County since 1836. They settled
on this land by 1850.
