Jonathan, his father, George, and his brothers, King and Levi, voted in an

Jonathan and Barbary had 17 children! It was said that they never saw all of
their children together at the same time. Jonathan and Barbary lived to the
north and west of the Searcy community but the land extended to the present
Highway 31 (Harold Jackson Harrison).

Jonathan was active in the Moriah Baptist Church, which is located north of
Greenville and a few miles south of Fort Deposit. Moriah was first constituted
on May 29, 1830. Jonathan was appointed Clerk for Moriah Church in 1832 and he

The Civil War took a huge toll on Jonathan and Barbary's family. They had seven
sons and six sons-in-law to fight for the CSA. Only three survived. Besides
losing four sons, they had six widowed daughters left and they lost most of
their plantation, which Jonathan had homesteaded (Harold Jackson Harrison).

It is family history that, at the mariage of each son, Jonathan Harrison gave
40 acres of land, a horse or mule, and 2 or 3 servants; and, they gave each
girl a cow and calf, bedstead, featherbed mattress, quilts, and 2 or 3
servants. The Harrison Cemetery is located just east of Fort. Dale. A little
further to the north is the Moriah Baptist Church of Christ and cemetery.
Jonathan Harrison was clerk of this church in 1832. Jonathan and his wife
Barbary Wallace were both baptized into this church on July 20, 1831. Their
land lay around Searcy and to the northwest to what is now Old U.S. Highway 31,
(now Alabama 185) to the Lum Bargineer place. The Jody Cates home place where
Aubrey Edwin Cates now lives (1968) is practically on the site of their home.

Birth Notes: Discrepancies on birth date and place:
The death record of son, John Wallace, stated that the place of birth of
William Wallace was Mississippi (Cherokee County, Texas - Death Records, Vol.
8, p. 122). However, the 1860 Jasper County, Mississippi Federal Census stated
that he was born in Alabama; and, the 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 Cherokee
County, Texas Federal Census also stated that William Wallace was born in
Alabama.

Every source that I have found stated that William M. Wallace's month of birth
was April. He stated that he was born April 1831 in the 1900 Cherokee County,
Texas Federal Census. April is the month of birth stated on his tombstone,
birth records from the James Christopher Wallace Family Bible, from the book
"New Summerfield Historical Memories", and Elton Lacey.

However, there are some discrepancies in William M. Wallace's year of birth.
His age was stated as 20 years old on the 1850 Butler County, Alabama Federal
Census which was enumerated on 5 Nov 1850. This would have made his year of
birth 1830. The year of birth on his tombstone is also stated as 1830. However,
when his year of birth is calculated from the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1910
Federal Census it would have been 1831. And, he also stated that he was born in
1831 in the 1900 Federal Census. Birth records from the James Christopher
Wallace Family Bible, the book "New Summerfield Historical Memories", and Elton
Lacey also stated that he was born in 1831.

And, there are also some discrepancies on William M Wallace's day of birth. The
birth records from the James Christopher Wallace Family Bible stated that his
day of birth was the 8th. However, the day of birth on his tombstone, from the
book "Historical Memories of New Summerfield", and Elton Lacey stated that his
day of birth was the 18th.

Therefore, until I find other evidence of William M. Wallace's date and place
of birth, I have chosen to use 8 Apr 1831, Alabama.

General Notes: William Wallace stated that his father was born in Alabama in
the 1880, 1900, and 1910 Cherokee County, Texas Federal Census.

William Wallace stated that his mother was born in South Carolina in the 1880
Cherokee County, Texas Federal Census. Then, he stated that she was born in
Alabama in the 1900 and 1910 Cherokee County, Texas Federal Census.

William M. Wallace had at least three brothers: Levi, George, and John. There
may have been more siblings (Elton Lacey citing James Oscar Greenwood who
received the information from his mother, Jessie Marie Wallace Greenwood).

William Marion Wallace and Mary Susannah Montgomery Wallace were both born in
Alabama. They were living in Jasper County, Mississippi by November 12, 1857.
Sometime between 1864 and 1870 they migrated from Mississippi to the New
Summerfield, Cherokee County, Texas area (Margaret Geyer Grammer). Elton Lacey
states that they arrived in Texas in 1870. The couple built a log house and
homesteaded a large tract of land two miles southeast of New Summerfield. Along
with homesteading a farm, William also made cabinets and furniture (New
Summerfield Historical Memories). Will had a limp from a war wound. He made
shoes for the Confederate States of America Army (Elton Lacey citing James
Oscar Greenwood). Note: William M. Wallace's first cousin, John H. Harrison,
also made shoes for the Confederate States of America Army.

At least two of William's siblings migrated from Alabama to Texas also. His
oldest brother, John Henry, settled in Milam County, Texas and is buried in
North Elm Cemetery, Milam County, Texas. And, his youngest sister, Martha P.
Wallace Cates, settled in Angelina County, Texas and is buried in Gann
Cemetery, Angelina County, Texas.(30, 74)
