submitted by: Mary Hoit Abbe Sumter County, Alabama Deed Book C, p. 11 F. S. Lion To Church Recd and recorded the 9th Octr 1837 Know all men by these presents that I Francis S. Lyon of the State of Alabama and county of Marengo have given and bequeathed and by presents do give and bequeath unto the Methodist Episcopal Church to be under the control of trustees appointed by said M. E. Church and for the purpose of erecting and keeping a Meeting house and grave yard a certain piece or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Sumter in the State of Alabama said land being a part of the South Et quarter of section Two in the Town-ship Eighteen Range One East. Beginning at a pine tree at or near a spring of water thence North fifty degrees West distance five chains to a post Oak tree near the meeting house and seventy five links to a marked hichory tree?thence South fifty nine degrees east distance one chain containing three acres more or less. To have and to hold all and singular the said described lott or parcel of land unto It the said Methodist Episcopal Church in fee simple forever, and I the said S. Lion for myself my heirs executors & administrators and do by these presents warrant and will forever defend, from and against the lawful claims of all and every person. Given under my hand and seal this day of Eighteen hundred and thirty seven, and of the Independence of the United States the C Signed and sealed and delivered in the presence of John C. Perry Interlined the word part David Blackshear The State of Alabama Sumter County Personally appeared before me Price Williams Clerk of the County Court of the Said county David Blackshear one of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing Deed who being first duly sworn deposeth and saith that F. S. Lyon whose name appears to said Deed as the grantor personally acknowledged that he signed sealed and delivered said Deed on the day of its date for the purposes there in contained in the presence of John C. Perry and this deponent ? and this deponent further saith that John C. Perry the other subscribing witness and this deponent subscribed their names to said Deed in the presence of F. S.
