Winnie Cox Duncan (Mrs.
W.W. Duncan) of Aliceville, AL. attended country schools in Knoxville
(Greene Co.), AL, until
entering Livingston Normal School in Livingston, AL. This
institution was founded by Miss Julia Tutwiler of Greensboro, AL, who
was President of the school at the time she attended there. At
this school Winnie Cox received her teacher's
license and taught in public schools for 3 years - first in Olney
(Pickens Co.) and then at McElwaine School near Gate City (Jefferson
Co.), AL. She married Dr. Wm. Wallace Duncan, a practicing
physician, in 1905 and they lived in Pickens County all their
married life.

were on hand for recent spring graduation ceremonies and reminisced of days when Miss Julia
Tutwilder, champion of both women's rights and higher education, was either president or a faculty member
at Livingston, then Alabama Normal College. The four are, seated left, Mrs. Esther Miller Godfrey,
Birmingham; Mrs. William Wallace Duncan, Aliceville; back left, Mrs. Rosa Quarles Cogle, Dixon Mills; Mrs.
Virginia Winston White Barnes, Montevallo. Mrs. Duncan, Class of 1902, is the oldest known living
alumna." |
