He was married to Rebecca SMITH (daughter of John SMITH) on 7 Jan 1857 in Washington County, Alabama.⁽¹⁰⁾ Rebecca SMITH was born in 1836 in Alabama. ⁽¹⁰⁾ John J. RAINWATER and Rebecca SMITH had the following children:

43 i. William RAINWATER was born in 1857.
44 ii. Mary S. RAINWATER was born in 1859. She died in 1929 in Washington County, Alabama, Frankville Baptist Church Cemetery.⁽¹⁴⁾
45 iii. John T. RAINWATER was born in 1866.
46 iv. Jackson RAINWATER was born in 1877.
