A new publication is available! Old St. Stephens, A Historical Records
Survey was prepared for the St. Stephens Historic Commission, co-sponsored
by the Alabama Humanities Foundation, a state program of the National Endowment
for the Humanities. This information is needed by Archaeologists who have a "dig
in progress". They have uncovered what appears to be the foundation of
Fort San Esteban, built by the Spanish in 1795. Because information is needed
to locate roads, landings, buildings, streets, businesses, etc., to develop the
area into an Archaeological Park, a compilation of records was necessary.
Jacqueline A. Matte, author of The History of Washington County:
First County in Alabama, assisted by local genealogists, Doris Brown and
Barbara Waddell, compiled records relating to Old St. Stephens--Spanish fort,
Choctaw trading house and Territorial Capital of Alabama. Excerpts from the
Halcyon & Tombecbe` newspaper (1817-1822), estate papers, tax records,
deeds, plats, maps and published accounts provide not only locations, but also
names of the people who lived and worked in Old St. Stephens. This report
includes pictures, an annotated bibliography of primary as well as secondary
sources, where records are located and it is INDEXED. Spiral bound with clear
plastic cover, it contains 110 pages. All profits go to the St. Stephens
Historic Commission.
Copies are available for $35, which
includes postage. To receive a copy, send check for $35 to:
