John Harvey Stokely was born in Pasquotank County, NC, the son of Joseph Stokely and Elizabeth Gray Temple Stokley. Sometime between 1825 and 1830 John Harvey, his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Blount Stokely and their family left North Carolina and went to Washington County, Alabama. They had six sons who joined the Confederate Army. Only two of those six survived the war. Following is a brief account of the service to the Army of the Confederacy of those six Stokelys of Alabama.
James (Jim) Blount Stokely was born in 1817 in Pasquotank County, NC. On March 29, 1862 the age of 45 he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 32nd Alabama Infantry Regiment for the remainder of the war. On October 7, 1862 he was captured at LaVergne, Tennessee. He was paroled on October 9, 1862. It was reported that Jim Came home wounded and sick and lived only a short time before he died. However, War Between the States records show that he died in Dalton, Georgia on June 9, 1863.
Charles Lewis Stokely was also born in Pasquotank County. On March 29, 1862 at the age of 37 he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 32nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. Army records state that he died at Tullahoma, Tennessee in October, 1862.
John "Jack" Blount Stokley was born in Washington County, Alabama in 1832. He enlisted as a Private on March 29, 1862 in Company G, 32nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. On December 31, 1862 he was wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River), Tennessee. He was captured at the battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863. He remained a prisoner of war until the end of the war. During this period he was housed at the military prison in Louisville, Kentucky and the military prison at Rock Island, Illinois. He was exchanged on May 23, 1865. After his release he returned home to Alabama. Sometime before 1870, Jack, his wife and three children left Albama and settled in Grimes County, Texas. He died there on January 12, 1926.
Samuel Erasmus Stokley ( His army records are in the name of Erasmus Stokely) was born in 1836 in Washington County, Alabama. At age 26 he enlisted as a private in Company G, 22nd Alabama Infantry. He was wounded in the shoulder and taken prisoner on December 31, 1862 at the Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River), Tennessee. He died on January 20, 1863 from the wounds he incurred in that battle.
Joseph A. Stokely was born in 1839 in Washington County, Alabama. At the age of 22 he enlisted as a Private in Company E, 11th Alabama Infantry. he appears on a Report of Casualties of the 4th Brigade, General Longstreet's Division, in action before Richmond, Virginia at Frazier's Farm on June 30, 1862. On July 2, 1862 he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond with a gunshot wound in the right leg. Records show that on August 8, 1862 he died in Chimborazo Hospital from diphtheria.
William "Bill" Allen Stokely was born in Washington County, Alabama in 1845. he enlisted as a Private on December 14, 1863 at Mobile, Alabama for the war. According to his army records he served in Companies G and K, 32nd Alabama Infantry. He was captured during the summer of 1864, in all probability in the fighting around Atlanta, Georgia. He was taken to Hartford, Connecticut as a prisoner of war. After his release he returned to civilian life. After the war Bill also moved to Grimes County, Texas.
