How the USGenWeb Project Started

In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. This is an outgrowth of that original Kentucky project.

The USGenWeb Project is a loosely organized group of volunteers working to create a center for genealogical research for every county in the United States. USGenWeb is not a commercial enterprise and information found on these pages is freely available to the public. It is also not a part of the original GenWeb. As you browse the pages, you will find some consistent elements. All counties will have an area for you to post queries and links to the state page and USGenWeb Archives. You will also see considerable variation; each page or database is the creation, property and responsibility of an individual volunteer. We are very proud of this project and hope that you are too. If you would like to help, please contact the state or county coordinator for the area that interests you.

Thank you for visiting CAGenWeb. We are proud to be a part of The USGenWeb Project, which is an effort to organize genealogical materials on the Internet. Our goal is to provide a Web site specializing in the genealogy in California with an emphasis on genealogy at the county level. We also have created an Archives which will serve as a respository for transcriptions of public records. Our project's success is only possible through the support of volunteers. Volunteers are needed in all phases of this project including hosts to maintain individual county pages, volunteers to submit transcribed public records for use in the USGenWeb Archives, and people to share their own personal resources by doing lookups for other researchers. Would you like to help? Please contact us if you would like to be a part of this exciting project.

The first California USGenWeb Project page was loaded on July 16, 1996.

The project's volunteer participants hope to make the California site of The USGenWeb Project a benchmark in on-line genealogical research locations. Please be patient with us as we grow. Bookmark this site and come back often!

If you have comments or questions about this project (things you'd like to see included, etc.), please send them to the Project Coordinator. Please also let us know if you find any problems with the links on the state page or in any of the county pages.
