"Fairmount Cemetery is located about halfway between Azusa and Glendora, California, which was known as San Felipe Hill even before our early pioneers . This was a landmark for the early Spaniards. Henry Dalton was granted this land and many acres of surrounding property that was under his ownership until about 1880. The federal government pronounced this public land and opened it up for homesteading. Many of our early pioneers who came here after the Civil War anticipated this and 'squatted' on what they later filed as a homestead. This is now within the city limits of Glendora. We, the trustees, are attempting to save this historic spot and have it registered as a state and federal landmark." This is an excerpt from a lengthy article written by Elizabeth Shorey that appeared in the Glendora Signal in May and June 1990. The following survey is an effort to recreate the actual plot count but in no way does it represent what would be seen today. The information contained herein was obtained from a 1932 survey and tedious correspondence by Elizabeth Shorey with relatives and descendents of those buried there. Elizabeth Shorey has recently discovered evidence that this property was used as a burial ground as earlyas 1840. This submitter visited
the cemetery and was quite disturbed at the condition. It has been In the late 1950's,
the owners of the nursery, which surrounds the cemetery, tried to acquire
the property The Trustees of Fairmount
Cemetery have succeeded in getting the cemetery on the City of Glendora
