Highland Cemetery K - M
New Castle
Copied by Donna L Drummond

The Ganley Ranch was at the east edge of New Castle when it was still
called Grand Buttes. The Ranch house still stands on the east side of
Main Street, New Castle, Colorado, a Large red brick with a bright blue
door.

The little frontier community had first been called Chapman and later
Grand Buttes. In 1888 it was officially named for the town in England of
the same name.

The town purchased the cemetery from Teresa Schuessler, June 23, 1897
for $200.00. Soldiers of the Civil War were the first persons buried
there; the dates of their deaths are unknown. Highland was the name
given the cemetery, which was divided into several sections. A flagpole
placed in the center of what was called the Old Soldiers Circle,
distinguished and set apart that area. The remainder was sectioned for
individual graves and a section set aside for paupers. Veterans can
still be buried without charge.

The records of Highland Cemetery were brought up to date in 1955 from
mortuary records, newspaper lists and Mary Creger.
