Each township is six miles square. Townships are numbered (North and South) from the survey baseline at 40° North (the heavy green line) in the center of this map. Ranges are numbered West from the 6th Principal Meridian in Kansas. The town of Cope is in Township 4 South - Range 49 West. Akron is in Township 2 North - Range 52 West.
