The categories are:
- Gone- Schools which have been razed, burned down or disappeared for other reasons.
- Abandoned- Schools which are closed and not used for any other purpose
- Endangered- Schools which are closing soon or have recently closed and likely to become abandoned or razed
- Retired- Schools which are not used as public, charter, or private classroom buildings, but serve in some other capacity (apartments, offices, etc)
- Functional- Schools still in use as classroom buildings
