BARLOW - John, William and Henry Barlow were all awarded land in the 1807 land lottery of Georgia. They lived in Washington Co at the time of the drawing, but were awarded land in Wilkinson Co. I believe the William Barlow is the same that married Edith Mathoda, but am trying to find the connection to John and Henry. I think John may be my gr3 grandfather who was in Mississippi by 1811. Both William and John had sons named Henry, but they were too young to have been in the lottery, so I am trying also to find out what happened to the Henry in the lottery. I have not seen further records of him in all my years of doing Barlow genealogy. Does anyone know where I might look for further records of these families in Wilkinson Co? I haven't been able to find any census records for Georgia prior to 1810. Perhaps very early wills, marriage records, court records, etc for say about 1790 to 1810, or earlier. Were they all burned? BARBEE - My GGG Grandfather, Benjamin Barbee b. 1816 m. Catherine UNK, one of their sons was Green Barbee (my GG Grandfather) b.1840 d. 1861 in Rockbridge Alum Springs, Virginia, during the civil war. Green married Elizabeth Myers and one of their sons was Benjamin Franklin Barbee who was my G Grandfather.
I believe that Benjamin b. 1816's father was James Barbee and his mother Lydia UNK. I am trying to connect James and Lydia and, if they were married, who their children were. I know that my Benjamin b. 1816 had a brother William. I also see that there was a James Franklin Barbee b. 1828 who married Harriett E. WIse b. 1825. I believe that James Franklin Barbee could have been James and Lydia Barbees child. I know that I found a deed from Lydia Barbee where she deeded land to her daughter, Ann Barbee Taylor (who m. Richard Taylor).

BEALL - I'm looking for information on William O. Beall who was Captain, Company F, Wilkinson Rifles during the Civil War. Stationed at Fortress Monroe, he returned home to Wilkinson County in ill health and died in 1862. I would like to find where he is buried and any other information about his family. 1860 census shows him as a boot and shoe manufacturer and living in the Irwinton District. He married Piety E. Hicks on October 8, 1843. Their children were Mary E., Frederic D., Nancy J., Harriett and Arthur C.
William O. Beall deeded one acre for the church located at the fork of U. S. Hwy 441 and the Toomsboro Road and the building was completed in 1856. He was a Baptist and Worshipful Master of Carmel Lodge No. 150, Masonic Grand Lodge of Georgia.
I know that Frederick D. Beall eventually moved to Laurens County and was a Postmaster. He's buried in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. At sometime, the "a" was lost from Beall. I believe that his son (name unknown to me) was my great-grandfather.

BROWN, THOMAS J. : Hi, I am looking for any and all information concerning the Brown Family of Wilkinson County. Thomas J. Brown married Clarissa Horton and I can't find any information concerning Thomas J. Brown. He is listed in the 1860 census but Clarissa is listed as a widow in the 1870 census. I can't find where Thomas J. Brown enlisted into the Confederate Army or anything about his parents or any other relatives. They had 3 children, Solomon, Mary and J.B. Brown. Clarissa married into the Wood family after 1870 and they moved to Laurens County. Clarissa is buried at Bluewater Baptist church in Laurens County along with her two sons. BRUNER - I would like to know if anyone has any information on the Bruner's in Wilkinson Co . The Bruner name was mispelled alots like Brewer, Bruwer, instead the n in the name was mistaken for a w. William Bruner m. Catherine Eliizabeth Flick. He and she came down from SC to Warren CO, Ga and then left and went to Wilkenson Co in 1809. They had one son is all I can find and his name was William M. Bruner. The first William Bruner died in 1818 and his wife died in 1819 supposely had the flu that went through there at that time. Where are they buried ? Wm. was the Exec. of Daniel Kingrey will and when Wm. died Daniel K. made William M. the Ex. The Kingrey's are buried in woods on Freeman land and now the Watkins own this land. This 2 acres of land that was the Kingrey's cem. only shows one grave and that is Amanda Watkins Kingery who married a Kingrey has a gravestone. I understand you can tell others are buried there by the soil sink and shapes of graves but no toomstones. William M. Bruner married Elizabeth Nixon from Twiggs CO. and they inheirted Elizabeth Nixon sister home, her sister Katheryn died about 1860 and it was located on Irvinton Street which was close to the Court House in Wilkinson.

BRUNSON- I am trying to find Isaac Brunson b. 1808 in Wilkinson Co. He had a son, Murry Lewis Brunson b. 1844. I don't have the name of his first wife. His parents may have come from SC and Isaac moved to SC at some point but was in Decatur County, GA by 1850 census and he had married Jane Bryant. Murry Brunson died some time between 1850 and 1860 census and is buried in the Brunson Cemetery in what is now Seminole County. I know that Isaac had a brother, Amos, who died of typhoid soon after coming to Decatur County. BURNEY Green Blount – I am trying to find directions to the McCallum Cemetery, where Burney and his wife Sarah Frances Ball Burney are buried. His sons may also be buried there. The list of cemeteries states Burney Cemetery is located one mile west of the site of Old Ball’s Church. That places it just inside Twiggs County. My great grandmother, who was his granddaughter-in-law, wrote they are buried at McCallum, which is shown on DOT maps south of Ball Church Road near McCallum’s Pond. Blue Chip Road appears to head in that direction, but everything is Posted. Has anyone been there? Is it accessible from Blue Chip Road or from Magnolia Street in Jeffersonville? Rumor has these two roads used to intersect. Who owns the land where it is located? Thank you for any assistance you can give. JDorsey

CHERRY -Parents of James and William Cherry that came to Wilkinson Co. In the 1820's or 30's from North Carolina and Married Louisa and Parmelia Frazier. Their Mother was possibly Mary and there was possibly sisters: Silvey, Rena, Paysey, Delina (Delila?) . Mary and Silvey definitely lived in their households but I'm not sure of Rena and Paysey and Delina.

CLEMONS - PHILLIPS - I am trying to find out information on Polly Clemons and Thomas Phillips. I believe they were married in Wilkinson County in July of 1825. I saw on the history of Wilkinson County that a John Clemons and Polly Clemons were early members of the Mt Nebo Baptist Church. I dont know if these are the relatives I'm looking for or not.
Sometime after their marriage, Polly and Thomas moved to Muscogee County where two of their children were born. I was hoping to find information in the marriage record that might lead me to the parents of either Polly or Thomas.

COLSON/COALSON - Related to Daniel & Cynthia (Potts) Colson (Coalson) and trying to get more information on them. COOK - Seeking information on the parents of two Cook brothers who came to Wilkinson County, GA from points east. They were named Amos Cook (b. about 1813) and William Marion Cook (b. about 1809) Their father died when they were very young. I think their mother's name was Mary. I would like to try and locate the grave for Sarah Statham Crutchfield d- June 23,1828.She lived next door to her father William Statham in the 1820 census. Her father moved to Houston county GA about 1827.
We know that Richmond Statham brother of Sarah obtained custody of the crutchfield children in 1839 10 yrs after Sarah's death.

DAVIS, Henry/POTTS, Nancy- I am interested in connecting with anyone of this line to exchange information. I will be happy to share anything that I might have regarding this line. My line is through Henry Emerson Davis that married Mary Ann Boon. I do have the scraps of their family bible, some in Henry's hand, with a small amount of information that is contrary to some that is on the internet. In addition, I have pictures of Henry Davis but, none of Mary Ann.

I am trying to go further back and have been researching in Kentucky and

I have tracked down certain segments of that branch of the family but, have been unable to confirm descendants of the James Bower that was the grandson of Oren Davis, mentioned in the Davidson book.

In GA in 1865 Martha married a Jewish soldier who deserted the Union Army during the Civil War, Peter Sternberg, b.Mar 1842 in Ohio d. 1908 in Penn, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. After the war ended, they returned to Indiana to live. They had one child, Sarah Annie, who died at 7 years old. After Peter died in Indiana in 1908, Martha returned to Macon, GA, and lived with her sister, Lucinda Day Pruett, and Lucinda's family in Macon. Martha died in Macon of malaria in 1917 and her body was shipped to Indiana to be buried beside her husband and daughter. All buried in Eutzler Cemetery , Misawaka, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.

DUBOSE, John H. - John H. DuBose (1795) of South Carolina married Amanda Akridge (1808) in Baldwin County in 1823 and raised their family in Baldwin, Wilkinson, and Washington counties. One of their son’s was Andrew John Hammond DuBose (1850) who married Neoma Anne Lingold (1862) in 1878. One of their son’s was Samuel Dennis DuBose (1886) who married in 1909.

DUPRIEST (DUPREE), CRISWELL, BECK - I am looking for information on Dupriests (Duprees) Becks and Criswells in Wilkinson County, Georgia.
I have just returned from a genealogical research trip to Georgia. It was quite productive in solving some mysteries but presented several others.
I was especially interested in my great-grandmother, born Mary Jane Dupree, whom I found in the 1870 census as an 11 year old, living with Aniny (mistranscription for Areny) Dupree (50), James Dupree (14), a domestic servant, Sarah Green, and Ivison Beck (5). The only information I had from her death certificate was that she was born near Macon and her father's name was John. I had found my current-generation relatives from her first husband in Savannah and an affadavit of my grandmother's birth (she was a child of a second marriage) said my grandmother was born in Savannah. The only other Mary Dupree I could find of the right age in Georgia was a family in Spalding County. If she had been from that family, her father, John, would have been killed in the civil war, but I couldn't figure out what might have happened to her mother, Mary, so that she was living in Savannah with James (not a brother of the Spalding County Mary) and Ariny (no recognizable relative of the Spalding County Mary).
From the records of the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah, I found that Arena Dupree (died 20 March 1875) was in the same burial Lot as Mary Jane's first husband and a daughter who died young plus Gertrude Beck who died 25 Oct 1897, age 3y, 6m.
At the Georgia Historical Society, I was able to find in the vestry records for Christ Church the marriage of Mary Jane Dupree and her first husband, taking place "in her mother's home." At that point I realized that Mary Jane was not the Mary of Spalding County living with another relative, but that Arena was her mother. It occurred to me that Arena might be a variation of Irene.
To my delight, I was able to find 1860 Census records for Bloodworth, Wilkinson, Georgia (post office, McIntyre):

I had come across
a newspaper article about the death of Iverson Dupree from a train accident
in 1869 and I wondered if the Ivison Beck had been related to this Iverson.
It would seem possible that Sarah married a Beck and then died so that
the Beck children were raised by relatives, or some similar senario.
I had the good forturne while in McIntyre, Wilkinson County, to find Milton Criswell, a descendant of Lawson Criswell and Sarah Temples Criswell. He was able to tell me some family history and show me the graves of many Criswells at Mount Carmel Cemetery. He also has restored an original family log cabin from 1800. He is remarkable!
My mysteries are:
Where is the father (John?) of Irena Dupriest's
children, both in 1850 and 1860.
I can find a Green Dupriest (26) of similar
age to Irena. Is he her brother? Her husband? Why is she continuing
to have his children if he is not with the family?
Is Sarah Criswell, (I mean the likely mother
of Lawson Criswell, not his wife Sarah Temples) the mother of Irena Dupriest,
making her Lawson Criswell's brother?
What is the relationship between the Dupriests
and the Becks? What happened to the parents of Ivison Beck, Gertrude
Beck and John Beck that they are being raised in homes of others?
If you can help me with any of this, I will

ETHRIDGE, JOHN- Does anyone know about the Ethridge and Phillips families in this news article ? "July 7, 1885 The Union-Recorder (Milledgeville) Married on July 3, by W.H. Stembridge, Esq. FAIR -William H. Fair, wife Thiraza (have also seen her name as Mathursa and Thrussey), plus three sons (Samuel J. B. Fair, Thomas J. Fair, and unknown male under the age of 5 were listed in the 1840 census in Wilkinson County, Georgia. William H. Fair was born in South Carolina; his wife and children were all born in Georgia. From other census information, it appears that S. J. B. Fair was probably born in 1832 while younger brother Thomas J. Fair was probably born in 1836. I have not been able to find anything before this census record for any members of this family. Nor have I been able to find death records for any of them. By the 1850 census, the third son (who was probably the youngest) is no longer in their household, probably deceased. Any ideas about where to look for possible birth or marriage records for events regarding this family in Georgia would be greatly appreciated. Census ages for William H. GAINEY -Am trying to find out information about my great grandmother’s parents. Her name was Annie Eliza (may be short for Elizabeth) Lavender. She was born Feb. 15, 1862 in Wilkinson county and died Nov. 6, 1922 in the hospital in Ocilla, GA while living around Fitzgerald, GA. Her death certificate listed her parents as Lemuel Lavender and Mary Gainey.
I believe the Lemuel listed on the death certificate was the son of Levin Lavender (I found something on the internet that said he died in Wilkinson county Oct. 15, 1871) and Charlotte McDaniel (site on internet had her dying in Wilkinson county Dec. 17, 1836). An internet site has Lemuel born Sep. 5, 1825 in NC and dying while serving in the Civil War in Danville, VA on Dec. 14, 1862. It says he married a Queen Mary Magdelene Hogan on Apr. 14, 1850 in Wilkinson county. I believe he actually married Mary M. (Magdalene ?) Hagan, whose maiden name was Mary M. Gainey. I found on the Wilkinson county genealogy website a marriage in Wilkinson county on Jan. 11, 1844 between Mary M. Gainey and Henry H. Hagan, Jr., Esq.
In the 1850 census, Lemuel and Mary are listed living with children named Thomas Hagan and Delilah Hagan, ages 5 and 4, respectively, on Sept. 8, 1850. In the same census in the same subdivision of Wilkinson county on Oct. 19, 1850, there is listed a Samuel and Mary Lavender with children Thomas and Delilah (ages 6 and 4) at the home of a Mary Gainey. I believe that Samuel is actually Lemuel and this is the same family as the one listed in the census on Sept. 8, 1850, but they have either moved in with or are visiting Mary’s mother, Mary Gainey. I found something else on the internet that had this Mary Gainey as the widow of Matthew Gainey.
After Lemuel died in 1862, Mary married a Howell King before 1870. He apparently died around 1872 and she is listed with 3 of her children, including Annie, in the 1880 census as Mary King. I can’t find anything on her after this. Based on the census records, she should have been born around 1822.
Any help regarding her birth date and place, death date and place, parents, and marriage date/place to Howell King would be greatly appreciated. Craig Lyles 9/4/2007

GILBERT - I’m interested in obtaining information about the Gilbert family that lived in Wilkinson County, GA and were slave owners. I have a copy of the 1850 Slave Owner Wilkinson County, GA list which shows Elbert J. Gilbert owned 7 slaves and according to the 1860 list he owned 13 slaves.
I am researching my family history (African American) and have traced my descendants back to the 1870 Census which shows my great great great great-grandfather, Peter Gilbert lived in Wilkinson County, GA, 2nd District (Irwinton P O) and was married to Crisy. GREEN - David Green, b. 29 Aug 1801, d. 05 Dec 1893, Pinetta, Madison Co., FL
David is believed to be son of Jesse J. Green who migrated from NC with the Culpepper family (having married a Culpepper) to Laurens Co., GA and then to Wilkinson Co. Around 1840, David moved to Lowndes Co., GA along with his daughter, Martha, and her husband, Jeremiah Coleman Dixon. He subsequently moved to Madison Co., FL where he died in 1893 and was buried in Hickory Grove Cemetery near Pinetta, FL. The information I have concerning David's relationship to Jesse was obtained from the book Wilkinson Co., GA Historical Records. HALL/FAIRCLOTH: When I was reading the history of Wilkinson County, I saw that ISSAC HALL was mentioned as one of the "founders"/early settlers of the county. HAYWOOD/STUART- I am looking for information on my paternal grandfather. His 1st name is either James or John. I have never met him and my parents were divorced when I was a baby. The story I have been told was that he was part of a Chaing Gang in Georgia and was a Haywood at that time. When he was "released", he legally changed his surname to "Stuart". I don't know when he was in the chang gang but it was prior to 1947 since that is when my father was born, as a "Stuart". INGRAHAM/INGRAM - I am looking for connections between my ancestors who were born in Georgia (I think Early County) in the late 1790’s..early 1800’s. In the last several of years, I have had my DNA analysis done and was almost an exact 37 marker match with an African American (I am Caucasian) whose family came out of Wilkinson County named Kenneth Ingram. I know that in those days of slave ownership, it was not uncommon for slave holders to father children by female slaves. I also know that freed slaves more often than not assumed their former holder’s surnames. What I am trying to find is a connection to my SW Georgia Ingraham/Ingram line. There were 4 brothers that I am aware of John S. Ingraham, b. 1797, William Ingraham, b. 1798, Hugh Ingraham, b. abt 1803 and Jackson Henry Ingraham, Sr., b. 1807. I do NOT know their father’s or mother’s names, but feel there is a connection in Wilkinson County based on the DNA match AND the statement that they came out of Wilkinson County. JACKSON, Joseph Etheridge Jackson 1832-1901, m. Sarah Jenkins, s/o Joseph Absolum "App" Jackson d before 1860 & Sarah Etheridge. I have seen genealogies that state that Joseph Absolum Jackson was the s/o Benjamin Carter Jackson but without proof given. There was a Benjamin Jackson of Washington County who received Lot 205 in Wilkinson County in

JACKSON, WILLIAM - I have hit a brick wall searching for enough information to go back to England for William Jackson. Here is what I know about him. He was born in England, probably in the 1750s and he served as a patriot in the Revolutionary War. After the war (don't know when), he settled in Wilkinson County, where he died around 1833 or 1834. I know that his will was probated in Wilkinson County in March of 1834. He was married to a Mary (or Mary Elizabeth), but I have not been able to find out her maiden name, which is a problem when you are trying to go back in the tree. I believe William and Mary had 4 children named: Nathan, I don't have a birth year (who married Elizabeth (Polly) Rogers; Absalom, born in 1801 and married Elizabeth Smylis; Elizabeth (may have been born in 1794) and married Archibald Odom; and Susie, who died unmarried. I would appreciate any information that you can come up with for William. I just can't trace the right tree back in England without more information, preferably birth information or wife's maiden name. Also, I'd appreciate any corrections to the information that I have. JOHNSON, GREEN- am trying to track down info on a Green Johnson, born abt Mar 1845 Wilkinson Division 93. I believe his parents were Robert Barnett Johnson & Mary Ann Carr, but I would like solid info to confirm this. Green Johnson was married to a lady named Elizabeth, but I have no further info on her except that she was also born in Georgia. Both relocated to Coffee County Alabama at some point. He was married in 1840 to Hannah Frederika Hoffman in Plaquemines Parish, LA. At the age he was at the wedding, it seems that he was perhaps married before. JONES - I'm looking for information on Richard David Jones born about 1818 or 1820 in Georgia. He married an Amanda Jenkins on Oct. 8, 1839 in Wilkinson County. He is on the 1840 and 1850 Wilkinson County Census. I think his father may have been John Jones, but I'm not sure. His is on the 1860, 1870, and the 1880 Macon County Census. He died 1899 in Macon, County, And Amanda Died 1891 in Macon County. They both are buried in Taylor County. They had 12 children. David C., William Wesley, Henry H, Stephen Cullen, Joseph H , Lucinda, Zachariah H., Amanda, Georgia Ann, Elias, Weltha Ann, and Sallie A. Their son Henry H is my gg grandfather. JONES, TILMON H.: I am trying to find Parents for Tilmon H Jones born 1840-1845 Georgia. He died in Pheonix Arizona 1919, in home for the insane. He Is buried in Tomestone Arizona served in the civil war. Married Sarah jane Branan Lindsey in 1865 Wilkinson Co Georgia she is the widow of James Lindsey who was killed in the war. Tilmon is in Wilkinson Co Georgia 1870. Goes to Texas in 1873 and is in McCullough Co 1880 with his children no wife. Marries Margaret Louise Sanders around 1877 ( I havent found a marriage record for them, I guess they marry) in Texas and has several children with her. He is in Graham Co Arizona 1900, 1910. He marries Rosie Parker in Cochise Co Az in 1910 and they divorce. His death cert does not list his parents. Records from the hospital do not list parents. I have searched the Georgia Census records in 1850, 1860and can make no links to him. There are two other Tillmon Jones in Georgia but they are not him. I have followed them out to their deaths. CADER KEATON-TAPPENA DENNARD. I am looking for information on these two people who where married in Wilkinson County (I think). Cader is listed as having his name submitted for the Land Lottery drawing of 1805. In the 1806 Land Lottery, the orphans of Cader Keaton drew lot # 98, 12th district, Wilkinson County. 1860 Federal Census of Mitchell County, where they moved, shows Cader, age 57, born 1803 in Washington County; and Tappena, age 50, born 1808-1810 in Wilkinson County. Their first child, James Madison Keaton, my great grandfather, was born in April 1845. The Cader of the Land Lottery and the Cader born in 1803 must not be the same person but maybe they are related. KING: My line was William King born March 16, 1818 in Wilkinson co., Ga....he had brother, Jehu(John) born Oct. 16, 1806 and Hiram, and a sister named Ann...parents supposedly were Bennet King and Polly.....(Mary, no doubt)...Does anybody know anything about the Bennet King in war of 1812 and in all the land drawings and tax digest from about 1798 til 1820...he was in census of 1820 in Wilkinson co. but then a later land lottery listed Mayr/Polly King , next friend of orphans of Bennet King...about 1821??? may be remembering that date wrong. any help appreciated....Jehu moved to Arkansas after the 1860 census was taken.....in 1860 my William was in Dale co., Al....he married in 1842 in Stewart co., Ga. to Winifred Hardie, daughter of William....then by 1870 William moved to Texas...Panola co. in 1870, Erath by 1880...don't know where he died.... KING/ASHLEY: I am looking for any record or information of the free black family of Kings. On May 14, 1868, 37 family members headed by Alfred King and Seaborn Ashley left GA by way of Savannah for Bexley, Liberia under the auspices of the American Colonization Society. Alfred was about 60 years old when they departed. The family did sharecropping in 1867 on a plantation in Marion during reconstruction but no info on which plantation they worked on. I am trying to connect the dots and need assistance. Seaborn Ashley was a blacksmith. Please see emigrant list.

WILLIAMS/KNIGHT - Looking for information on my Great grandmother's family. Her name was Ada Williams born in Wilkerson county on Oct. 27, 1874. She married Ira Knight, son of James and Jane (Butler) Knight, on Jan 5, 1893 also in Wilkerson county. Her and Ira moved to Coffee county Georgia some time between 1900 and 1917. I have her parents as J.D. Williams and Mary Ann Myrick (Davidson History of Wilkerson County). Trying to find something on her parents. Haven't been able to find where they are buried. KNOWLES/NOLES: Robert R and Janey Knowles/Noles are my paternal great-grandparents. (Not sure of exact birth years, but around 1850 + or - 5 yrs.) I found them listed on a Telfair County Georgia United States Census in 1910 and on the Dodge County Georgia United States Census in 1900. I believe Jane Noles maiden name was Sarah Jane Welding or Weldon. In Book C of Cool Spring Primitive Baptist Church Minutes (located in Twiggs Co), I found: 2 May 1885 Robert Noles By Letter. and 4 September 1886 Sarah Jane Noles By Experience. I did find a Robert Noles age 30 and Jane Noles age 30 listed as husband and wife on the 1880 Wilkinson County Georgia United States Census. That is as far as I have been able to go with either Robert or Sarah Jane (Welding/Weldon) Noles/Knowles. LANGFORD: Searching for information on the Wingfield Langford/ Naomi Martin Family of Wilkinson. Primarily interested in the 1905 thru 1920 years of family history.
Wingfield died between 1905 - 1910 due to a possible ruptured appendix aboard a local train. Naomi and a daughter, Agnes, died as a result of being struck by lightning while crossing a field between 1910 - 1918. The remaining younger children were raised by family while some older children were married. There were a total of 8 children - all girls. LESLIE- I descend from James Love Leslie who was born in 1808 in Georgia. He had migrated to Leake Co., Ms. by 1850. His wife was Martha Ann Seals. I have located a Jas. Leslie on the Wilkinson Co., Ga. census. He lives next door to Malachi Sanders and Daniel Sanders who married Sibbie Leslie, daughter of Silas and Bethany Tyson Leslie.
My James Love Leslie's children were named many of the same names in the Silas Leslie family. James Love Leslie's children were John Love, Martha E.,James Niblack, Joseph A., Sibby Ann Easter, Rebecca, William, and Susan Bethany.
Silas and Bethany's children were Rebecca, Sarah, Kizzie,Silas, Sibbie, Rachael, Bethany, and Joel.
Also Bethany Tyson Leslie's sister Divine Tyson was married to William Niblack and the Niblack name is given to children in both families.
I feel certain that my James Love Leslie is a son of Silas and Bethany Leslie but have no proof.

MCKENZIE, TIMOTHY AUGUSTUS - I am looking for any info on Timothy Augustus McKenzie and wife Mary McCook. I am especially interested in their daughter Martha McKenzie who married Joseph Frank Etheridge. Their daughter Lena Etheridge Drake was my great-grandmother. She was raise in Emanuel County I believe, but her parents were of Wilkinson Co. Timothy Augustus "Gus" McKenzie was an Ambrotype Artist by trade and I am trying to locate any pictures of he and his family, especially his daughter Martha. She died, and several of her children, as a young mother as a result of the "fever", or so I've been told. Martha and her mother Mary McCook are buried at Snow Hill Cemetery near McIntyre, Ga. Any help on information or these pictures would be extremely appreciated. He was listed on the 1869 and 1870 census as "an Ambrotype Artist and as a "Photograph Artist" so I can't believe a there are no pictures around. MCQUAIG/MCQUAGUE/TEMPLES/BECK: My name is Mary Ellen Morris. I descend from James Temples ( b 1814) and Mary Beck. Their daughter Charlotte Temples ( b 1839) is listed on the 1850 Wilkinson County Census along with her father James, sister Martha, and brother James Jr.
Charlotte is my G-G Grandmother and she married Edward (or Edmond) Mcquaig (or McQuauge), who was born in 1832. Charlotte and Edward can be found on the Calhoun County, AL 1860 Census with a 4 yr old daughter, Amanda. Also living with them was Sara Maree, 20 yrs old, and Georgia Maree, 1 yr old.
I know that Edmond McQuage died in 1863 in Vicksburg, MS due to pneumonia.
After 1860 I have no record of Charlotte McQuaig. Her daughter, Amanda, mved back to Wilkinson County, and married John Henry Beck in 1873, but was a widow in 1880 living only with her 2 children on the 1880 census.
I hope someone can help me find any information on Charlotte Temples McQuaig (or McQuage) after the year 1860. I want to know what happened to her. Mary Ellen Morris 8/8/2012

MILLER:- My husband's 2great-grandfather A.L. Miller is found in the 1850 Wilkinson census, listed as a railroad manager. The family is said to be from Sweetwater Tn, and moved to Screven Co. Ga. A.L. Miller died in 1865 and is buried in Screven Co, but I can't find the family in 1860. I have found his widow and children in Screven in 1870 and subsequent censuses. His widow Priscilla was born in Madisonville Tn, same county as Sweetwater. His brother William who is found in Screven Co in 1870 is also buried in the Cornelius Burke Cemetery in Screven Co, and a brother Drury who lived in Pickens Co, Al. PAULK - I'm interested in knowing who the first wife of Uriah?Euriah Paulk b 14 Oct 1780 Wilkinson Co (twp?) he lived in the county and had children previous to 1830, then he married Isabel Hughes/Hughs (parents?) 24 Jun1825 she was born ca 1816. Information I found in library genealogy books on Wilkinson Estate Record of Returns, 1828-1838, lists Brice Paul as father of James T, Hester S, Elizabeth, Martha A, Rutha, John. Elizabeth married Lynch Brown Porter, Hester married Robert Carroll, Ruth married Matthew Owens, James T married Winnifred Frazuer; Martha Ann married Kilby Jones. BRICE PAUL served in the GA Military in the War of 1812, drew in the 1805 Land Lottery; The Orphans of Brice Paul drew in the Land Lottery of 1827. I can find no mention of spouse or parents. PITTMAN - Searching for a Pittman/Pitman who would have lived in Wilkinson or surrounding area around 1785-90. My g-g-g grandfather was named Elbert Pittman and the first mention of him that we can find was a marriage record in Laurens County (Dublin) in 1811 when he married Nancy Counsel/Council. Our guess is that Elbert would have been born around 1785-90 but this is purely speculation. His oldest son was named JOHN WALLACE PITTMAN if this is any clue to Elbert's father's name. Land records showed that Elbert owned a farm in the northwest corner of Laurens County near Wilkinson County in an area that bordered Pulaski County. POTTS - Potts/Davis: I am looking for information on William Potts who resided in Wilkinson County in the 1820 to 1841 time span. William married Sarah Davis daughter of Nancy Davis around 1820. They had a son Valentine Eli, and a daughter Arminda. I believe William was born around 1803 in Kentucky and somehow migrated to Wilkinson County at an early age. PRUETT, E.W.H. (Allen) - I am researching information on E.W.H. (Allen) Pruett, husband of Mary Jane Mercer. He is the son of Elisha Pruett, b. 1789 d. 1852 and Drucilla LNU. I have been able to locate E.W.H. Allen Pruett on the Wilkinson County 1850 Census as Henry Allen Pruett age 11. Yet, not able to locate any in the 1860 nor 1870 Census. When Mary Jane came to Dodge County, she was either divorced or Allen was deceased. We have no knowledge of the whereabouts of his grave. Mary Jane is buried in Dodge County, GA. James J. was an itinerant preacher in both GA ( Darien BC, Hancock Co.) and AL where he died in 1859 in Russell Co., AL. Have no prior confirmation of this family. SANDERS, Merritt Arthur Our Brick Wall is Merritt Arthur Sanders/Saunders who maarried Sarah "Sally" E. Fountain in Wilkinson County, Ga. on Jan. 1, 1842. She was born on April 4, 1824 in either Jefferson or Wilkinson County, Ga. and grew up in the latter. He was born in Georgia (where?) in 1820, and was living in Lowndes County in 1850. He had sons Samuel G., born l844, Daniel, and Jesse. His daughters were Frances and Elizabeth. He died about 1856--and was supposed to have "gone back to his old home" where he came from prior to moving to Lowndes County to die. No one ever knew where he died or was buried. He supposedly was related to a Logan Saunders/Sanders, born in S.C. about 1800. Logan was not his father as far as we know, because there is no record of him having a wife or children before 1828, when he married Eleanor Shaw in Decatur County, Ga. Our Sanderses supposedly came to Lowndes County about 1833. They lived near Masse, Ga., in the part that later became Berrien County, and in Milltown, which became Lakeland, Ga. Sally Fountain was the daughter of Ethelred Fountain, and niece of Israel Fountain, both of whom lived in Wilkinson County. NOW--who is Merritt Arthur's family? Which Sanderses? There was also a Daniel A. and Samuel B. Saunders, a generation older than Merritt Arthur, in the Berrien County records, both from Wilkinson County. Did they live near Limesink Church near the western Wilkinson County line? Is one of them possibly the father? Merritt went by the name "Arthur", and that name is still in the family. SAPP - My great grandfather was William Robert Sapp who was married to Ebbie Pritchett Purdue and had 3 children, including my grandfather, Robert Philip Sapp, born 1885. William Robert died about 1894 after a hunting trip on which he was soaked from dew from lying on the ground. Pneumonia seems to have been the culprit. Ebbie went on to marry Thomas Akins. SIMPSON - My ggg-grandfather'sname was Alfred Simpson. He was born in 1818 somewhere in Georgia. According to a census, his parents were born in SC. His father-in-law, born in S. C., was Isaiah Langley. In 1840 Alfred married Mary Langley in Talbot Co. However, I did not see him on the Talbot co. 1840. I noticed on the website of the church that there was a large number of Simpsons listed but later that Alfred. By 1850, he had moved to Alabama. Mary is buried in Seale, AL, dying just after having her 12th child. After the civil war Alfred took his family and moved to Louisiana. Wills, and of course my gg grandfather James Clayborne Simmons b. 2 Mar 1840 Dooley Co., Ga. Except for Susan Lucinda & J.C. exact yr of birth is not known for the other children. John M. is on the census of 1840 in Dooley Co., but not on the 1850 census of Thomas Co, Ga where J.C. is living with his wife, Nancy Milton Simmons m. 1841 Thomas Co., Ga. as a matter of fact the only child from the first marriage living with them is my gg grandfather, J.C. We find the daughters later in life in Florida (which is where Lacy J. eventually moved). When Lacy died in the early 1890's his will includes his son, John but he does not know his residence, therefore John lived to adulthood.
So my brick walls are my 3X great grandmother, whose name or tribe I do not know, and my great uncle John M. who disappeared off the census after 1840, I also would love to know where they were married. I suspect in Wilkinson Co., can anyone help me? Thanks, Lillian 5/10/2008

SMITH - I’m looking for information on the family of Elizabeth (Hancock) & Lewis Smith. His name is alternately spelled Louis. The couple, both born in GA, married in Wilkinson Co, GA on 19 May 1825 and were still in that county for the 1830 & 1840 censuses. They pop up in 1850 living in Milledgeville along with their recently married son, John H Smith (living with his in-laws, the Gann family, whose surname was misspelled as Gun). STUCKEY: Private Edmund Stuckey, of Captain L. C. Bains Company of the Vaiden Artillery Regiment of the CSA in Vaiden Mississippi, enlisted on the 18th day of Jan. 1862. He stated he was born in Wilkinson County Georgia, was 53 years old, five feet, six inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair and was a farmer when he enlisted. VAUGHN- Jesse Vaughn, early pioneer in wilkinson made a will in 1825 (probated in 1829). In it he named, among other children, a granddaughter Mariah McMillan and a grandson, Alexander McMillan. The latter is my person of interest, but shows up nowhere else that I can find in Wilkinson.This mention implies that one of Jesse Vaughn's daughters married a McMillan who was father of Alexander McMillan. They moved to Jones Ct. Ga. about 1829 and James Lowe dies in 1831.[Census 1830] Jesse Vaughn made WILL dated 9-17-1825 Probated 1-29-1829. My GGrand-Father, Jeremiah Willett [B 1815 D 1877] had a sister named Sarah who married ???? Vaughn. Sarah was born abt. 1813 D after 1880 census, Elmore Ct. Ala. I did not find Coleman Vaughn on 1860 census. Coleman Vaughn was listed as being 54 Yrs. and 7 months in 1864 when the state reorganized the Ga. State Militia. That is the last record of have of Jesse Coleman Vaughn. Jeremiah Willett was an Ensign 1837, Wilkinson Ct. Ga. Jeremiah married Sarah Lowe, the dau. of James and Mary [Polly] Vaughn Lowe, before 1840, most likely in Wilkinson Ct. Ga. A Sarah Willis marries Coleman Vaughn[son of Jesse Vaughn] Nov. 19, 1832, Wilkinson Ct. [I believe that this Sarah Willis is really Sarah Willett, Jeremiah's sister.] Sallie [Sarah] Vaughn was living with her Nephew, James Lowe Willett, 1880 Elmore Ct. WARD: I am trying to find out if my Great Great Grandfathers' Name was Riley Bennett or Riley Benjamin Ward. He was Born in Wilkinson County around 1838 and moved to Laurens County at the outbreak of the Civil War and joined Co. A 49th Georgia Infantry. I'm not sure if this information is accurate. He would have had a son named William Thadeus Ward. I would also like to find out my Great Great Grandfathers' wife's name. I believe that their son, William Thadeus Ward, is buried in Bluewater Baptist Church Cemetery in Dublin. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me with this. It is very important to me. WATSON: I am looking for information on my greatgrandmother. Her name was Sallie T. Parker Watson. She was born in 1878. As an adult she lived in Laurens Co, but I can not find anything on her as a child. I believe her mother's name was Rocksy or Roxy. I am not sure if when she died or where. WEEKS/WEEKES am trying to locate the graves or any information you can provide on Bartemus Weeks or (Weekes) and Martha Jane Weeks Smith in Wilkinson County, Georgia. Bartemus was Martha Jane’s father and he was married to Elizabeth Jones in 1852. In 1856 Martha Jane Weeks from Twiggs County married Rev David Smith, a Primitive Baptist Minister. In the 1860 census it shows them living in the High Hills District near Danville/Allentown area. Rev Smith owned approximately 900 acres of land and 38 slaves. WEEKS- PARKER-BUTLER - I was able to trace my family to Bloodworth District, Wilkinson County Gordon Georgia area back to around 1824. The race is predominately black. The family names are Weeks, Butler, and Parker.
My Great Grandfather James Weeks (b.abt 1884) - married Della (Parker) Weeks (b. in Georgia abt 1886) had a daughter My grandmother Corine Weeks (b. in Georgia 1916)
Della's parents are Martha Parker (b. abt 1864) and Joe Parker (b. abt 1875) However, Martha was raped by a Cherokee Indian whose name sounds like Quanna Pakka. this might have happened in the either Georgia, North or South Carolina. So my great grandmother Della is one half Cherokee Indian.
James Weeks' father was Robert Weeks (b. in Maryland abt 1860) who maried his mother Georgiana Weeks (b in Georgia.abt 1863)
Robert Weeks father was Joseph Weeks (b in Georgia. abt.1824) and his mother was named Notice Weeks (b in Georgia abt.1831) My Grandfather was Robert Butler (b. in Georgia abt 1909) - (Gordon, Wilkinson GA) I don't know if he is dead or alive but he lived somewhere in the Wilkinson, Gordon, Georgia area. His mother is Kate Butler (b.in Georgia abt 1880) His mother Kate listed herself as a widow in one of the census' but I don't know who her husband was.
This is all the information I am able to find about my family. I would like to know if my relatives were slaves and if so who owned them? Or if Joseph Weeks migrated to the United States if so from where? T. Pyror 2/22/2006

WILLIAMS/KNIGHT - Looking for information on my Great grandmother's family. Her name was Ada Williams born in Wilkerson county on Oct. 27, 1874. She married Ira Knight, son of James and Jane (Butler) Knight, on Jan 5, 1893 also in Wilkerson county. Her and Ira moved to Coffee county Georgia some time between 1900 and 1917. I have her parents as J.D. Williams and Mary Ann Myrick (Davidson History of Wilkerson County). Trying to find something on her parents. Haven't been able to find where they are buried. WILLIAMS - My brick wall is my g-g-grandfather. My granddaddy told me his name was Joe or Joel Williams. I would like to know if John Jesse Williams, who at one time lived in Wilkinson County, was a sibling/relative of Joe.
What I do know from family stories is that Joe's parents were Martha and John Williams. I don’t know when John Williams, his father died, and I don't know exactly when Joe Williams died, but it was sometime during 1900-1910.
My granddaddy also told me that Joe married Fannie Grimsley, daughter of Sherwood and Elizabeth (Howell) Grimsley of Twiggs County. The only census record I can definitely identify as belonging to Joe Williams is the 1900 Montgomery County census. He is listed as Joseph S, with Fannie as his wife, with his mother who is listed as Martha Busby (married and widowed again?), and with four children. Another daughter, Barbara Allen “Bobbie”, was already married at that time and not listed with them.
My g-grandfather is on the 1900 Montgomery census as Dudley Williams. (Later in life, he was known as Dud Lee and D.L. On his first marriage license, he is listed as Dudley A. Williams.)
The birthdate for Fannie on the 1900 Montgomery census is way off and listed as 1838 (I have quite a few records for Fannie—her birthdate being listed as 1851-1855 in various documents). We found her grave (1855-1935) last summer at Center Methodist Church, so birthdates for Joe and Martha may be off on the 1900 Montgomery census. The children’s birthdates were right or about right.
John Jesse Williams was first married to Georgia Ann Busby (Collins Cherry). In 1880, John Jesse was living in Wilkinson County with Georgia Ann and their family. The 1880 Wilkinson census is confusing in that it lists a Martha Williams as the mother of the head of the house, but then in a column notation says she is living with her daughter. On the death certificate of John Jesse Williams, his mother was listed as Martha Cowart (I am wondering if Martha was related to Elias and Sarah Cowart of Wilkinson County.) from Wilkinson County and his father as John J. Williams from Georgia. John Jesse (after he and Georgia Ann divorced) and his second family were living right next door to Joe Williams’ widow, Fannie Williams, in 1910.

WOOD, DAVID HODGES- cannot find out information at all except where he was the minister who married different couples in Georgia. I know that he started Wood’s Meeting House and that he was a minister. I understand he Was Greenberry Wood’s Father, But I cannot find him anywhere listed. WRIGHT – looking for any information on the father of James Giles Wright (1810-1851). I believe his name was Charles Wright (1773-1848) and that he married a Crete or Cherokee woman named Mary (pos1758-1851). He is believed to have had 5 children: Samuel (1797-1887)(husband to Elizabeth Wilmot), William (b1799), Dorcas E (b1801), Jesse (b1803), and James Giles (1810-1851). Thank you!
