John William Bains

 

John William Bains, secretary, Hilo, Hawaii.  Born Wreck Bay, NSQ Australia July 12, 1880.  He was the son of John and Esther  Elizabeth Mary (Watts) Bains married Jean Jeffrey in Honolulu Jan 11, 1911.  Six children Jean Esther, John Arthur, Jeffrey Vernon, Juanita Daisy, William Henry, Manono.  Educated at Australian public schools, leaving school in 1893.  On Sydney Daily Telegraph until 1903.  China Mail Hong Kong 1903-1908; Shanghai Times 1908-1910; represented Shanghai journalists, Manila Carnival 1909; arrived Honolulu, joined Honolulu Starr 1910; secretary Hilo Railway Co 1911-1914; purchasing agent Oahu Railway Company 1914-1916; returned to Hilo for secretarial work and since that time has been employed on each of the Hilo newspapers.  At present secretary Hilo Board of Trade, Industrial Accident Board of Hawaii (since 1916); Hawaii Island Welfare Bureau 1920; Kilauea Council BSA since 1919  Naturalized 1917.  Was in charge of secretarial and office work, selective draft, Hawaii County during war.
