Paul Heinrich Bartels
Paul Henry (Heinrich) Bartels, businessman, Honokaa Hawaii. Born at Cologne Germany 18 Oct 1874. He was the son of Henry August and Agnes Schmidt Bartels. Married Elvira Charlotte Lilinoe Hapai at Hilo, 15 Oct 1900. Children: Paul H Jr (born ca 1905-deceased by 1920), Henry August (born ca 1907) and Helene Lilinoe (born ca 1908). He left his native country in Feb 1892 to join his eldest brother in show manufacturing business in Boston MA. Held various positions there, last being bookkeeper. Came to Hawaii due to health in 1898. He entered the firm of H Hackfeld and Co in Honolulu and was employed by this firm and later American Factors Ltd from then until Oct 1918. Last positions being asst mgr and mgr of Hilo and Kailua branches. Became cashier and bookkeeper Honokaa Sugar Co, Pacific Sugar Mill and Hawaiian Irrigation Co Ltd 1919. Was appointed asst manager of these firms Feb 16, 1921. Member Hilo Lodge No 759 BPOE.
He died 29 June 1946, Hilo. Buried Homelani, Memorial Park, Hilo. His wife was born 18 June 1876, died 19 June 1941, Hilo, buried Homelani Memorial Park. Her parents were George Washington Akau Hapai and Harriet Rebecca Kamakanoenoe Sniffen.
