Eugene Santos Capellas
Eugene Santos Capellas, school principal, Hilo, Hawaii, born Ponta, Delgada, St Miguel, Azores, Feb 26, 1880. He was the son of Manoel S and Frances (Costa) Capellas. He emigrated 1888 according to the 1910 census. Married Eliza Dos Reis, at Wailuku, Maui July 15, 1903. Her parents were J A Dos Reis and Maria C. Children: Dorothy Norma (born 6 May 1904, Hilo), Cecilia Pauline (who married --- Muirhead) (born 26 Jan 1906, Hilo), Elizabeth Bonaventure (born ca 1909), Eugene S Jr (born ca 1912), Laurence Joseph (born ca 1914), Thelma Frances (born ca 1916), Phylis Claire (born ca 1918), Donald Harding (b ca 1922), Aileen (born ca 1925). Educated in grammar schools, and took correspondence course in law. Asst teacher, Kenalahou School, Kula Maui 1897-1901; principle Hakalau School, 1901 to date; active in development of the school during this period; chairman of Republican County Committee Hawaii since Oct 1918. Treasurer 1920 republican campaign in Hawaii County. Served in Territorial Senate and was electred president in his first term. President Hilo Portugese Savings and Investment Co, Hilo. Member Hilo Teachers Union, secretary 15 years. St Antonio Benevolent Soviety, Honolulu; Court Mauna Kea A.O.F; Senior warden; order of Owls, Nest No 1865; Exec Committee Kilauea Council, B S A; secretary and treasurer Hawaii Education Assn. Onetime president of the Territorial Senate. Died 16 Aug 1962. Buried Homelani Memorial Park, Hilo.
