John Hind

 

John Hind, sugar planter and plantation manager, Hawi Hawaii.  Born Aug 1, 1858 at Jarrow-on-Tyne, England; died 1 Aug 1933, Honolulu, Hawaii.  Son of Robert Robson and Mary (Unwin) Hind; received common school education. He came from England in 1864 Married Ella Renton (deceased in 1886) in Brooklyn, NY 1885.   Married Alice Renton in Kohala, Hawaii 1889 (she was born Oct 1867, Hawaii; her father was from Nova Scotia and her mother from the Isle of Jersey).  Children: Robert Renton (born 1885), John Henry (born Dec 1890, Hawaii), Oswald Arthur (born June 1891, Hawaii), Muriel (born May 1893, Hawaii), James Unwin (born Jan 1895, Hawaii).  Manager Hawi Mill and Plantation since 1884.  According to the 1900 census he was the Plantation Manager.  By 1930 census he had removed to Honolulu and was a "sugar expert".  Was president in the following corporations: Hawi Mill and Plantation Co Ltd, Kohala Ditch Co, Hawaii Railway Co (Mahnkona), Kehena Ditch Co, Captain Cook Coffee Company, Hind Plantation Company.  President of Puakea Plantation Company and Homestead Plantation Company.  Member Honolulu Lodge #409, F & A M, Commercial Club, Oahu Country Club, Pacific Club.
