Xavier Louis Helbush
Xavier Louis Helbush. Hilo, Hawaii. Born Antwerp, Belgium Jan 30, 1866. Died 22 May 1956, Hawaii. Son of John Baptiste and Rosalie (Groeninck) Helbush. He married Mary Mattos Dec 1890 (she was born in Portugal Sept 1868). Dagmar Anderson October 1908. Ten children: Andrew Pearl (born Dec 1891, Hawaii), Ernest Emil (born 2 Feb 1893, Hawaii), Rose M (born March 1894, Hawaii, died young), George H (born April 1895, Hawaii), Henry W (born April 1896, Hawaii; married Belena Sousa), by first marriage. Rosalee (born ca 1907, Hawaii), Violet D (born ca 1913, Hawaii), Frederick L (born ca 1915, Hawaii), Eugene Anderson (born 1916, Hawaii), Eloise K (born ca 1918, Hawaii), Hilda P by second marriage.
He graduated Royal Athenaeum, Antwerp in 1884. Law office in Antwerp 1884-1887. Traveled to Canada, United States, Panama, Peru, Chile 1887-1889. Arrived Hawaii August 1889. Overseer Hawaii plantations 1889-1895. Express business for himself in Hilo, later general merchandise, business firm of Potemkin and Helbush 1895-1909. With Hilo RR Company now Hawaii Con. Ry Co since 1909. Has been interested for several years in cooperative associations and in 1919 became president of Rochdale Cooperative Assn. Practices and teaches drugless healing and a great believer in theosophy (sic). Member Hilo K of P Lodge, Owls Lodge, Hilo.
It appears from a muster roll for the Marine Corp in NY roster list for 1888, which shows a Xavier Louis Hellebosch. May be him. He was on the SS Mohican, and went to Ecuador.
