  • Oliver Perry Davis / Haywood Riley Davis - Interested in any information anyone may have on an ancester Haywood Riley Davis. I know he married Susan Carter in Coles County on 7 Sept. 1879. He was living in the Pleasaant Grove community at that time. Also, desiring to find any information on his father, Oliver Perry Davis. Am not sure if he also lived in Coles county, know he did live in Clark county, IL for several years. He was buried at a Mt. Tabor cemetery and lived a few miles from Charleston, or Charlestown. Also, do not know if this was in Coles country. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Oliver Davis - 6 May 2000

  • Frank Nees - Am looking for information on my grandfather Frank Nees. His first wife was a May Bell and they had two daughters that I know of. Sarah Catherine Nees/Johns/Hardwick. She lived in Mattoon, IL. and is buried in Janesville cemetery. She was my grandmother, Frank later married Cynthia Ellen Cartwright and they had children, Myrtle Decker, Ellen Price/Carter. Grace Minear. CAtherineCoxM@aol.com - 2 May 2000
  • Roy Beebe Blackman - My paternal grandfather, Roy Beebe Blackman, as far as we know was born in Mattoon Oct. 16, 1877 to Miner D. Blackman and Sarah Daphne Beebe, who married Aug. 23, 1876. We are not certain if they were married in her hometown or Mattoon (or some other town in Illinois). We do know from the 1880 Federal Census that the family was living in Mattoon at that time and that Miner was listed as a hardware dealer. (I have momentarily misplaced my copy of the census, but believe they are listed on Page 24 of Enumeration District 55 - something about "west of the_(illegible) railroad.") There were 3 children - Roy, his half-sister and his half-brother.

Since we have determined that there are no vital records covering the birth of my grandfather, we wonder about church records (what churches would have been in existence in the town at the time?) or newspapers notices. What newspapers, if any, would have covered Mattoon from August 1876 through October, 1877?

Sometime in 1885 or 1886 the family is supposed to have moved to Southern California by train.. Therefore I am trying to determine if it was possible for them to have begun their trip locally with the ??Railroad and how they might have continued. Sincerely, Carol Kredt - 1 May 2000
  • Charles Wallace - I am seeking information on Charles J. Wallace and wife Levina Peterson who were married in Daviess Co., IN in 1 June 1826. Their son, William Arthur Wallace, was born in 1827 in Indiana. The family appears on the 1830 Daviess County, Indiana Census with 2 males under 5, his age 20-30, wife's age 15-20.

In 1840, Charles and family appear on the Coles County, Illinois Census with 1 male under 5; 1 male 5-10; his age 30-40; 1 female under 5; 1 female 5-10; wife's age 20-30.

In 1850, I find Lavina and children on the Madison County, Marine Township, Illinois Census as follows:
    John B. Thompson, 28, farmer
    Lavina, 38
    Squire F., 2
    Mary E., 2/12
    William A. Wallace, 22
    John F. Wallace, 20
    Catherine A. Wallace, 15
    Margaret J. Wallace, 14
    Charles B. Wallace, 12

Through further looking, I find the marriage record of Lavina Wallace to John B. Thompson 12 December 1845 in Jefferson County, Illinois. I also find another marriage for a Lavina Thompson (Mrs.) to Hiram Wright on 25 May 1862 in Coles County, Illinois.

Did Charles and Lavina get divorced? Did Charles die in Coles Co. before 1845? (There IS a charles Wallace in St. Louis County, MO in 1850.)

William Arthur Wallace was married in Jasper County, Missouri on 1 January 1861 to Rebecca Jane Coffelt. Was William there for the Civil War? There is no evidence of this family in Jasper County (other than the marriage record) until 1880 (and this is where they remained until their deaths). Their two oldest children, John, was born in Illinois in 1862, and Emma born in Illinois in 1864. Did the family move back to Coles County to be with family for the duration of the war?

Any help in solving my mysteries would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Claire Wichelmann - 28 Apr 2000
