From family Bibles and stories handed down by family members, Eli went out one evening and when he didn't return, his wife went to look for him, leaving her 4 young children with relatives and friends. Neither were ever heard from again. We know it had to happen between 1839-1840, since their youngest child was born in 1839 and they do not appear on the 1840 census. It was supposed that they were captured and killed by Indians. (no proof). The children's family and friends dropped the "O" from Craigo and they become the Craig children. (Samuel J. Craig (1831-____); Phoebe Ann Craig (1835-____); Richard J. Craig (1833-1908); Sarah Jane (1837-1853); and John Thomas (1839-1903); The children grew up in Edgar Co. My line, Richard J. Craig, married Drexa Dinwiddie, d/o William & Philadelpha Newton Dinwiddie, and moved on to Vermillion Co, IN. We need help in finding the parents of Eli Craigo. • Hamilton / Hess / Good / Boger - I have a Hamilton list of births that passed down through my family. I do not know how this family connect to mine but it is not a direct line. This information is on an old yellowed piece of paper. It is in papers that were in the Boger family of Lebanon Co, PA. Valentin Boger lived in No. Annville Twp, near Union Water Works, Lebanon Co, PA. The Hamilton National Genealogical Society has supplied me with a group sheet that pertains to this family and it shows these children to have been born in Lancaster County, PA. This group sheet also shows that John Hamilton married Louisa H. Lucy GOOD and he died in Brockton, Edgar Co, IL. AND it also shows that Henry Hamilton married Catharine HESS and he died in PARIS, EDGAR CO, IL.The following is what is written on the paper:

William Hamilton born 2 Feb 1801
Mary Hamilton, wife of Wm, b. 2 Mar 1806
"Elizabeth Hamilton Born 12 Abrial in yeare (next line)Sec____(maybe Sechant) __ wife of William Hamilton 1819." The 1819 is below the "yeare." I believe this probably means that Elizabeth was the Second wife of William Hamilton.

On the other side of the paper--
    Emanual Hamilton 5 Sep 1825
    John 9 Mar 1827
    Elizabeth 2 Feb 1830
    Hanry 6 Nov 1832
    William 6 Dec 1834
    Lewis 27 Nov 1837
    Abraham 21 Jan 1840
    Mary 18 May 1842
    Addem 8 Dec 1845
    Catharinea 25 Jan 1847
    Aron 3 Jul 1852
This last entry is in different ink but the same handwriting so it may be that this listing was made between 1847 and 1852. The listing on the other side referring to Elizabeth is also in a different ink than any other on the paper. Also written on the paper is:
    1876 6 2 (2 is crossed out and changed to a 1)
    1801 2 1
    ________
    75 4

So it appear that someone was calculating William's age at death. Is he buried in Lebanon County? What was his connection with the Boger family? The Bogers were PA Dutch.

Also written on the paper is
    1862
    1852
    ____
    10
Did Aron die at age 10?

I welcome any correspondence on this paper. All dates in this message have been proof-read. Win Wood - 5 Mar 1998

    HEARS ABOUT BROTHER'S DEATH

Isaac Hendry Receives particulars of his Brother's Death in California

The following letter was received Monday by Isaac Hendry from the people who his brother, Charles, a former Brocton resident, was working for when he was stricken and died week before last:

    "Talfadale Farms, Perris, Calif.,

Mr. Isaac Hendry, Brocton Ill. - My son Lyman wished me to write you of your brother's death and of the time he spent with us at Talfadale Farms.

He came here six months ago and has been a most faithful and efficient employee as well as the close friend of the Wilkinson Bros.. At Talfadale, who feel his death as a personal loss. He had been in the best of health during this time excepting at times when he complained of a pain in his chest, which lasted only a short time and which he thought was indigestion. One day last week he had been plowing and came to the house and said he had that pain in his chest again and my son took him to the doctor at Perris, who pronounced his heart and lungs sound but advised him to rest the remainder of the day.

He came back to the farm and after dinner I went to Riverside, but before I left I asked him how he felt and he said that he was all right. He was lying on a cot in a storage barn where it was cool and comfortable. The children have their swings there and were playing around him when I left. Later he went across thereat (sic.) to take his medicine and when he came back he fell just as he reached his cot. Verne, my grandson, saw that he was very sick and telephoned for the doctor who came in a few minutes. Some of the neighbors were called in but he had died when he feel (sic.) and the doctor pronounced his death as apoplexy.

The children were very fond of Mr. Hendry and are almost inconsolable over the death of their friend. We all miss him very much and he said that this place seemed more like home to him than any place he has been since leaving the East.

About six weeks ago he said to me that lie had dreamed a lot of his mother lately and it seemed as if something was going to happen to him.

On the back of his registration card he had written some lines which read as follows: 'A save way to live, the best way to die, 'tis living in Jesus-, why don't you try? Jesus is coming soon, am you ready to meet him? City Park, Riverside, Calif.'

We will send you all of his effects and his money. We surely miss him here and can scarcely realize that he will never come back again. You and the other members of his family have our sincere sympathy. The L.O.O.F. Lodge of Riverside (I.O.O.F. Evergreen Lodge #282) will conduct the funeral services. Assuring you again of our heart felt sympathy, I am sincerely yours, Jean G. Wilkinson."

  • Samuel Nolan - Looking for info on a SAMUEL NOLAN who purchased land in Edgar County IL in 1830, 1836, 37, 38 and 1840. I am trying to find the parents of my 3G Grandfather GEORGE W. NOLAN b30/31Jan1823 somewhere in OHIO. He married DRUSILLA BOWMAN on 18Sep1843 in Vermillion Co. Indiana. Their first child SAMUEL NOLAN was born ~1845 in ILL. George and Drusilla had more children in Indiana and moved to Iowa in 1849. It is a long shot that the SAMUEL NOLAN who purchased land in Edgar Co. ILL could be the father of George W. Nolan.

Drusilla Bowman's family was part of the many inter-related families including MORGAN, COCHRAN, PRICKETT, and other families who settled the Vermillion Co. IN and Vermilion Co. ILL area in the late 1820's.

The children of George and Drusilla Nolan: SAMUEL B. NOLAN b 1845ILL-md Emma Bell; CATHERINE M. b1846 -md C.C. Cleveland 11Apr1865 inBoscobel, Grant Co. WISC.-d 1932 in Spokane, WASH.; CAROLINE b01Nov1847 IND-md JESSE C.H.ESTES 01Sep1867 in Marion Co.IA-d10Sep1877, buried in ValleyCemetary, Guthrie Co. Iowa; ANGELINE b1850 IND-d1854 Allamakee Co. Van Valkenburg 1879 in Guthrie Co.IA; IDA BELL b1866 IA- md John Louis Staten.

I haven't found them yet on the 1860 US Census, they are in Guthrie Co.IA in 1870.

Drusilla died 24Nov1874 and is buried in Valley Cemetary, Guthrie Co.Iowa next to her brother STEPHEN FRANKLIN BOWMAN, her daughter CAROLINE NOLAN ESTES and several grandchildren.

George remarried to PERMELIA (?AMOS?) and moved to Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa where he died 01Feb1881 and is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetary.

George W. Nolan was presumed to be of Irish descent, his father possibly born in Ireland with the nick-name of "OLD NEDDY' or "OLD NATTY" . I'm not sure of their religion, Drusilla's family were Methodists and they were married by a Justice of the Peace.

I've only been into genealogy for about a year and have been stuck on this family for about 6 months! Any info would be appreciated.....Thanks. Susan Fortenberry - 12 Mar 1997
