The Rev. John W. Tangman

The Rev. Tangman served 44 years as a pastor in the American Lutheran Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, retiring in October 2001. He was a 1955 graduate of Trinity Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, with a bachelor’s degree in divinity. He served an internship in 1955 at Calvary Lutheran Church, a new mission in Bluffton.

On June 9, 1957, he was ordained into the ministry of the American Lutheran Church and was installed as pastor of St. Paul’s (Borchers) Lutheran Church, Seymour, that same year.

In 1962 he was called to the mission congregation of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Washington, then in 1964 he accepted a call to Emanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Compton, Ill.

In 1966 he returned to St. Paul’s (Borchers) Lutheran Church, but then was called to a mission congregation at Lutheran Community of Christ, Columbus, in 1978.

In 1986, he accepted a call to a mission congregation at New Hope Lutheran Church, Monticello, where upon his retirement he was honored with the title of “Pastor Emeritus.”

Born Aug. 30, 1930, in Sunman, Indiana, he was the son of Emmert H. Tangman and Martha E. Zimmerman Tangman, who both preceded him in death. On Sept. 12, 1954, in Sunman

He married Marilyn Scholl and she survives in Seymour. He also is survived by a sister, Florence Tangman, LaVerne, Calif.; two sons, Mike and Matt; Four grandchildren, Stephanie, Evan, Claire and Jenna; and two great grandchildren, Erica and Maya. Bishop Jim Stuck, Pastor George Silavs and Pastor Robert Sullivan will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Borchers). Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Jackson County.
