Robert Lee Horton

April 6, 1927 ~ June 16, 2019

Robert Lee Horton, 92, of Rising Sun, IN, passed away at 3:30 PM, Sunday, June 16th, 2019 at The Waters of Rising Sun.

Robert was born in Canaan, IN on April 6, 1927, a son of the late Mary Ethel (Lanham) and Edward Horton. Robert grew up in Switzerland County and attended school in Pleasant. Robert proudly served his country in the US Navy during WW II, serving on the USS Broadwater and the USS Black Hawk. While in service, Robert received the WWII Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal. Robert married Melba Gullion Horton in November of 1944 and to this union three children were born: Elmer, Tillie and Roberta. Robert and Melba were married over 50 years until her passing in 2000. Robert worked several years for the Indiana State Highway Department and the Ohio County Highway Department. Robert also farmed for many years. He was a faithful Christian and member of the Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ. Robert was also a lifetime member of the Rising Sun American Legion.

Robert is survived by two daughters, Tillie Courtney (Carl), of Rising Sun, IN and Roberta Rowlett (Stephen), of Madison, IN; by daughter-in-law Nancy Horton, of Rising Sun, IN; by 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Robert is also survived by a sister, Nellie Taylor, of Sellersburg, IN and a brother, Ned Horton, of Henryville, IN.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, by his first wife Melba Horton, by his second wife Maxine Horton, by his son Elmer Horton, by a brother Joe Horton, by his sisters Betty O'Brien, Gertrude Reuter and Goldie Walker.

Visitation will be Wednesday 5-8 PM at Markland Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 PM, Thursday, June 20th at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN.

Burial with military honors will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery.
