Record 92 Name: Walt Rowinsky Website: Referred by: Other Method From: Time: 1999-04-21 13:59:00 Comments: I'm completing research, for publication, on counterfeiting in the first half of the 1800's. Rising Sun has close connections to a large operation centered in Northeast Ohio. One of the principal counterfeiters, Daniel Brown, was an early settler of Rising Sun and had his home and business there and in Lawrence, Indiana until his death in the jail at New Orleans in the early 1830's. Brown's counterfeiting operation covered the United States from New England to New Orleans and expanded into the western territories and states as they were created. I'm looking for a contact to work with to fill in gaps on Brown's activities, business and criminal, in the Rising Sun/Lawrence/Cincinatti area, determine the availability of information on the early Masonic Lodge in Rising Sun (Brown and other possible counterfeiters were early members, it was common to use organizations of that type as cover), determine the availability of newspaper accounts of Brown and counterfeiting in the local newspaper, and determine the relationship of others in the community to Brown's operation (names include DeCoursey and Latta, as well as another settler originally from the Hudson, Ohio area). I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help me out as a contact or provide some advice. Thank you Walt Rowinsky |
