BIOGRAPHY:

John L. Clark ---- Born November 18,1845 in Ripley County
Parents --- ?(unknown) According to 1850 and 1860 Census, John may have been reared by Hannah and George Lewis of Manchester, Dearborn, Indiana. It's possible his father was Orren (Orin, Orrin, Oren) Clark, who was critically injured in a knife attack by Cyrus Cross (who died in the attack), and not expected to live. This was reported by "The Democratic Register" on April 18, 1847.
Place of Residence given when enlisting in the Infantry as "Ripley County".

Mustered into 37th Regiment, Company D, Indiana Infantry as Private --- October 22, 1861.
Term ---- 3 Years.
Mustered out at Nashville Tennessee, November 28, 1862.
Joined U.S. Cavalry, 4th Regiment, Company K, at Nashville, Tennessee November 28,1862.
Served there until the end of the war.
Served in 13 engagements.(including Indiana Infantry and US Cavalry)
Captured: Lovejoy Station, Georgia--August 20,1864 and made POW and sent to Andersonville (Fort Sumter) Georgia.
Paroled: February 26,1865.
Discharged: February 28,1865--San Antonio, Texas.
Marriage: After war married Ruth N. Beckwith in Dodge, Minnesota.
Occupation: Ranched in Knox, Nebraska until filing for disability 1888.
Upon filing for disability moved to Corvallis, Oregon, Benton County.
His obituary (The Corvallis Gazette, October 2, 1896, p. 3) states that he suffered from "rheumatism of the heart," which is the long-term consequence of a heart-impairing infection, known today as "rheumatic fever".
His entire family removed to Corvallis, Benton, Oregon, in about 1893, and he died September 25, 1896 of his ailment. His widow Ruth filed for a pension from both State of Indiana and U.S. Army (certificate # 456.169).
He has a marble U.S. veteran's grave marker on his grave in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Corvallis, Oregon.
