Paul Curtis Connelley, born 28/Mar/1896 in Ripley County, Indiana, died 28/May/1986 in Bellingham, WA. Buried in the military cemetery in San Luis Obispo, CA. Overseas in September, 1918; assigned to Company H, 358th Infantry. Participated in battle of St. Mihiel. Died of pneumonia October 28, 1918, Mesves, France.

Son of H. William and Anna Mary Laaker; born December 3, 1892, Brown Township, Ripley County, Ind. Moved to Dearborn County in 1908. Farmer. Called into service June 26, 1918, Lawrenceburg, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio. Embarked for overseas September 4, 1918; assigned to Company C, 335th Infantry, 91st Division. Died of pneumonia October 30, 1918. Buried in American Cemetery, Ravigny, Meuse, France. The American Legion Post, Dillsboro, Ind., is named the Laaker-Northcutt Post. (See p. 00).

Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to 29th Company, 8th Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade. Died of influenza October 14, 1918, in Base Hospital Camp Sherman. Buried in cemetery of German Methodist Church, southeast of Greensburg.

Buried in West Fork Cemetery, near Bryantsburg, Jefferson County, Ind.

Son of W. H. and Edna F. Land; born April 10, 1894, Bryantsburg, Ind., near the Ripley-Jefferson County line. Farmer. Entered service May 1, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 35th Ambulance Company. Went overseas in August, 1918. Died November 15, 1918, (place not known), from wounds received in an accident. (Burial place unknown.)

Died of pneumonia October 21, 1918, in Vittel Hospital, France. Buried in Cemetery at Vittel, Vosges, France.

Assigned to Wagon Company No. 1. Served on Mexican Border. Sailed for France August 7, 1917. Assigned to Quartermaster Corps, Wagon Company No. 100. Died of pneumonia in Camp Hospital No. 28, Nevers, France, February 16, 1919. Buried in American Cemetery, Nevers, France.

Son of Perry and Missouri Brown; born October 10, 1895, New Marion, Ripley County, Ind. Farmer. Called into service September 9, 1917, Versailles, Ind. Son of John and Caroline Diver; born August 16, 1895, Sunman, Ripley County, Ind. Railway employe. Enlisted May 12, 1917, in U.S. Regular Army, Indianapolis, Ind. Assigned to Company A, 16th Infantry, 1st Division. Joined his regiment at Ft. Bliss, Tex. Overseas June 10, 1917. Transferred to Company D, 16th Infantry, 1st Division. In first raid made by the Germans on American Army. Killed near Montdidier, April 28, 1918. Buried near where he fell.

Son of William and Florence Downey; born June 27, 1894, Dabney, Ripley County, Ind. Stenographer. Enlisted in U.S Navy June 29, 1914, Cincinnati, Ohio. Assigned to 4th Class Yeomen on battleship Missouri. Promoted to Chief Yeoman. Died of pneumonia September 30, 1918, in Municipal Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. Buried at Holton, Ripley County, Ind. Survived by widow, Wilda Elders Downey, Greensburg, Ind.

Son of William and Sarah Duncan; born May 29, 1888, Manchester, Ohio. Farmer. Called into service June 25, 1918, Versailles, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to Company F, 150th Infantry, 38th Division; then to Company H, 336th Infantry. Sent to Camp Merritt, N.J.; then to Camp Mills, N.Y. Died of pneumonia in Camp Mills Hospital October 23, 1918. Buried in Washington Cemetery, Elrod, Ripley County, Ind.

Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to Company A, 335th Infantry. Transferred to Camp Sevier, S. C. Embarked May 17, 1918; assigned to Company M, 120th Infantry, 30th Division. Saw service on the Ypres front in Belgium, and about Kemmel Hill. Killed in action October 10, 1918, Vaux, Andigny, France. Buried near where he fell.

Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to Company A, 335th Infantry. Transferred to Camp Sevier, S. C. Overseas May 17, 1918; assigned to Company I, 119th Infantry, 30th Division. Saw service on the Ypres front, Kemmel Hill, and Voormezeele. Died of wounds at Rouen, France, October 16, 1918. Buried at Rouen, France. American Legion Post, Holton, Ind., named in his honor.

Son of Calvin R. and Ada Weber Francis; born December 6, 1893, Correct, Ripley County, Ind. Electrical lineman. Enlisted in U.S. Navy September 28, 1915, Louisville, Ky. Trained at Cincinnati, Ohio, and New York. Promoted to 3rd class Electrician on destroyer, Jacob Jones. Lost at sea December 6, 1917, when destroyer Jacob Jones was torpedoed off west coast of England. Survived by widow, Clara Francis, and children, Mildred Clara, and Mary Margaret, Osgood, Ind.

Son of John and Louisa Fruchtnicht; born March 11, 1895, near Batesville, Ripley County, Ind. Polisher in furniture factory. Called into service June 28, 1918, Versailles, Ind. Entered Aviation Repair Department at Speedway, Indianapolis, Ind. Assigned to 821st Aero Squadron, Signal Corps. Died of pneumonia October 13, 1918, Base Hospital, Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind. Buried in Huntersville Cemetery, Batesville, Ind.

Son of Arch and Mary Ivins Gilland; born January 29, 1894, Osgood, Ripley County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service September 9, 1917, Versailles, Ind. Trained in Camp Dodge, Iowa; assigned to Company B, 350th Infantry; transferred to Camp Sevier, S. C.; assigned to Company C, 117th Infantry, 30th Division. Died of pneumonia May 17, 1918, Camp Sevier. Buried in New Marion Cemetery, Ripley County, Ind.

Transferred to Company G, 28th Infantry, 1st Division. Met instant death October 6, 1918, in Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Buried, Exermont, France. Enlisted in Company I, 3rd Ohio National Guard, April 10, 1917, Cincinnati, Ohio. Sent to Camp Perry, Ohio; assigned to Company C, 166th Infantry, 42nd (Rainbow) Division. Embarked October 27, 1917. With Army of Occupation; died from accidental causes January 16, 1919, Coblenz, Germany. Buried in Tanglewood Cemetery, Versailles, Ind.

Son of Finley and Cordelia Burchfield Roberts; born June 22, 1895, Elrod, Ripley County, Ind. Farmer. Called into service February 23, 1918, Grinnell, Iowa. Sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa; transferred to Camp Gordon, Ga., assigned to 38th Company, 10th Training Battalion, 157th Depot Brigade; then to Supply Company, 350th Infantry. Died of pneumonia in Base Hospital at Camp Gordon, April 19, 1918. Buried at Green Chapel, Ripley County, Ind.

Died October 14, 1918, from wounds received in action, near St. Quentin. Buried in American Cemetery, near St. Quentin. American Legion Post, Friendship, Ind., named in his honor.

Assigned to Company C, 28th Infantry, 1st Division at Ft. Ringgold, Tex. Overseas July 12, 1917. Saw service at Cantigny, Chateau-Thierry, and Verdun. Wounded in action at Argonne, France. Sent back to U.S. Died of pneumonia Camp Taylor, Ky., February 22, 1919. Buried at North Vernon, Ind.

Son of B. F. and Content B. Wilson; born July 13, 1897, Dillsboro, Dearborn County, Ind. Later moved to Ripley County, Ind. Student in Mooreshill College. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army Medical Department, March 5, 1917, Columbus, Ohio. Went into training at Columbus Barracks, where he died of diphtheria April 25, 1917. Buried at Dillsboro, Dearborn County, Ind.

Son of Lorenzo L. and Flora Jackson; born April 27, 1897, Ripley County, Ind. Moved to Rush County in 1899. Laborer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army July 24, 1916, Columbus Barracks, Ohio.
