Church Point Democrat June 13, 1908
A serious shooting occurred here Sunday morning about 11 oclock which may result in the death of Gabriel Thibodeaux, of Branch and T.O. Guidry, town marshal, is now under bail charged with shooting him.
Marshal Guidry states that he acted in self defense. He was acting in his official capacity when he went to arrest Thibodeaux for disturbing the peace. As he was making the arrest Albert Mott interfered and shoved Guidry down. When he arose Thibodaux had pulled a revolver and Guidry drew his own weapon and shot in self defense. He fired six shots, all of which took effect, two in the chest, and one in the right arm and three in the legs. Thibodaux fired two shots at Guidry both of which missed.
After the shooting Guidry gave himself up to Deputy Sheriff W.T. McBride who was spending the day in town, and was carried to Crowley on the afternoon train and placed in jail.
Thibodeaux was taken to his home near Branch and is in a serious condition, and it will be miraculous if he recovers, however he is said to be doing well at present.
Guidry was given a preliminary hearing in district court Monday evening and released under a bond of $10,000. He returned to this place Tuesday morning.
Guidry has always been an efficient and dutious officer and it is indeed regretted that he was forced into this trouble. Babilas Doucet is acting marshal awaiting his trial.
