(Winston’s note: The following requires more research. Present day Sonnier Dr. begins LA 95 crosses a gully and intersects at Maggie Lane and continues in a loop to meet Vanicor Drive and then LA 95. If it begins as is suggested below then the road is Maggie road and intersects with LA 370 (Roxie Hwy. There is also a bridge that crosses what I believe is Pointe Noire Gully a short distance before meeting Roxy Hwy. I do not remember reading that Lazard Daigle owned land in this area. His land was located on Pointe Noire Rd. between the intersection of Pointe Noire and Link road and Bayou Plaquemine)
(A map of Acadia Parish dated January 1923 shows that Maggie Road already exists)
The petition of TREVILLE CORMIER and others from Third Police Jury Ward asking for a public road to be opened, beginning at PUBLIC ROAD IN POINT NOIR and running between lands of RAPHAEL VANACOR and CLEOBERT MATTE and others to intersect gravel road near TREVILLE CORMIER leading to Church Point, and asking that a committee of Freeholders be appointed by the jury for the purpose of tracing and laying out said public road was presented and read, and on motion of Mr.CORMIER, and seconded by SACANLON and carried, the following resident landowners of the Third Police Jury Ward are hereby appointed as a Jury of Freeholders to trace out the said public road, and report to the Police Jury, to wit: Messsrs. THOMAS DAIGLE, TREVILLE CORMIER, LAZARD DAIGLE, DUPLEX ARABIE, DR. W.A. JENKINS and DR. T.T. TOLSON
The funds for the above road were approved to purchase ROW from ERNEST THIBODEAUX and one small bridge for public road leading Point Noir to intersect gravel road near Church Point.
(Winston’s note: (Sept 17, 2002)…I asked Mom if she knew the location of the above named people. The only one she knew of was that DUPLEX ARABIE who lived on Sonnier Rd. (near Pat Daigle’s home)

Vorice “Jo-Lo” Meche | (GDD). Vorice at one time owned a country race track. It was a two horse track with starting gates. I do not recall the distance of the races but it was a short straight run. My father Jack Boudreaux often took me with him on Sunday afternoons. It was about the mid 1950’s. There was betting among the spectators which were usually small stakes, a few cents. A man named Elias Touchet owned a beautiful black horse named “Black Mama”. I never once saw her win a race. My great uncle, Alphie LeBoeuf also owned a race horse named “Seagram 7”. |
Galbert (Gilbert) Matte I | nicknamed “Tamp”. Gilbert Matte II (nicknamed) “Gab” farmed, raises stock and had a mill to grind sugar cane to make syrup. Tamp grew his own tobacco. When the tobacco was harvested members of the family would lay the leaves on their lap and brush the leaves to remove stems. The leaves were soaked in sugar water and covered with cloth. Then the tobacco was twisted by hand in a shape lie a rope. The final step was to place a heavy load on the twist. Tamp would jack up a corner of his house, place the twist between the sill and the concrete pillar. The twist was called a “Torquette” (GPP) |
