SHREVEPORT - Services for Judge H. W.
Ayres, age 85, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 17, 1985, in the chapel of
the Rose-Neath Funeral Home on Marshall Street, with the Rev. W. O. Lynch,
minister of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by Dr.
Benedict Galloway. Burial in Forest Park Cemetery.
He died on Tuesday,
May 14, 1985, after a brief illness.
Judge Ayres, a member of the
Louisiana Judiciary for 32 years and five months, was a retired former Chief or
Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal. Prior service included 11 years as Judge
of Bienville, Claiborne, and Jackson Parishes; a 3 1/2 year assignment to the
Third District of Lincoln and Union Parishes; other assignments included
presiding over a special panel on the Fourth Circuit in New Orleans and as
Justice Ad Hoc of the Supreme Court.
Following his admission to the bar,
he practiced law in Arcadia and Jonesboro for almost 17 years.
Judge
Ayres, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ayers, was a native of Ashland,
Natchitoches Parish, La. He obtained his education at Ashland High School, where
he graduated May 21, 1918, and at L.S.U. Law School.
After retirement, on
April 30, 1975, when reached the then mandatory retirement age of 75 years,
while maintaining his domicile in Jonesboro, he continued to reside in
Shreveport.
Judge Ayres is survived by his wife, the former Edna Ewing,
to whom he was married December 21, 1929, a son, James Ewing Ayres, an attorney
at law of Shreveport, husband of Susan Lloyd, two grandchildren, Laura Jean
Ayres LeBlanc and Leland Harrison (Lee) Ayres, both of Baton Rouge, and a host
of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was a member of the Noel
Memorial United Methodist Church, the Louisiana State Bar Association and
Jonesboro Lodge No. 280, F & AM, and, for many years, of the American Bar
Association and other organizations of the legal fraternity.
Pallbearers
are: Judge Pike Hall, Jr., Judge O. E. Price, Judge Charles A. Marvin, Judge
James E. Bolin, L.C. Ewing and Robert K. Mayo.
Memorials may be made to
the American Heart Association, Noel Memorial Methodist Church or charity of
choice.
Judge Ayres wife was Edna EWING, daughter of William Oliver EWING, Sr. and Caldonia Maudie (MAY) EWING.
