JEAN BAND OF CHOCTAW

 

·       The earliest recorded mention of the Choctaw tribe is believed 1540, where they were living in the southern Mississippi area.

 

·       The Choctaw are a Muskogean speaking people.

 

·       1700s they were settled in present day Mobile, Alabama, Biloxi, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana.

 

·       After France colonies where relinquished to Spain, members of the Tribe began to move across the Mississippi River.

 

·       The Choctaw removal was seen as a “test case” for the United States government, before the other Tribes would be removed from their lands.

 

·       The forced removal of the Choctaws had devastating effects on the Tribe, disease, starvation and exposure caused the loss of many Tribe members.  Many members of the Tribe

where not prepared for the removal.
