I am doing research on the trial of Gregory William MARTIN of Arnaudvile
Louisiana. On 26 Sep 1896 The Clarion newspaper reported that Dr. Gregory
William MARTIN gave himself up to the sheriff of St Landry Parish on 23
Sep 1896. He was charged with the murder of Julien STELLY on Friday 27
Mar 1896. The trial started on Wednesday 14 Oct 1896. Judge DUPRE presided
over the trial. District Attorney GARLAND was the prosecutor for the state.
E. B. DUBISSON and W. S. FRAZEE were the lawyers of the defense. The case
was submitted to the jury on Friday night 16 Oct 1896. Saturday morning
17 Oct 1896 a mistrial was entered. I would like any information available
about this trial. Was this case retried at a later date.

Where is Bayou Boeuf? Hannah JACOBs LEWIS left a tract of land in her will.
It is described as: 21 acres, St. Landry Parish, situated on the bank of
Bayou Boeuf, bounded on the upper side by property belonging to Mrs. Landry
J. CAMPBELL...aquired by purchase from William H. LEWIS, 3/8/1881. The
USGS locator did not find. The 1880 census only has the family in Ward
5, St. Landry, no other info. Does anyone know where this property might
be located?

some help on the Johnson family from Acadia Parish. I understand that Acadia
was, at one time, part of St Landry Parish and when Arcadia was established
some of the records remained in St. Landry. If this is true, can you help
me with info. on the following : Solomom ( Tom or Thomas ) JOHNSON, b.
June 22, 1862 in Church Point, m. Marie WILL December 10, 1885 in Church
Point, La. Solomon father was: Solomon O. JOHNSON m. Sarah ( Clara ) Jane

I am having grave difficulties in obtaining info on Free Men of Color in
the St. Landry Parish in the 1800'. Were they required to register this
classification with any authorities? What distinquished Free Men of Color
from other Blacks ? Do you have any info on the Opelousas group of Free
Men of Color who departed the United States for St. Dominque (Haiti) during
the mid 1800s? Any information into this queries would be of great help.
