Will Book 6, George Guild, 27 Sep 1801
“On board the Snow Eliza Capt. William Auld in Lat.73, 30 on her passage from Martinique to Baltimore September 27th 1801
This is the last will and Testament of George Guild of the Island of Tobago, Surgeon and Practitioner of Physic there and I do nominate and appoint Alexander Buchanan Esqu, Planter, William Currie Esq, Doctor Harry Bruce, Doctor Robert Smith, all of the aforesaid Island of Tobago and my nephew John Guild/ son of my brother John Guild of Dundee in north Briton/ and also his two brothers William and George to be the Executors of this my last Will and Testament for my two mulatoe Children Jean and Bettsy, It is my will that all my surviving Slaves shall be sold together to one person & if possible attach to an Estate or Plantation – Fanny & Betty on being sold to receive Ten Joes? Each. I give and bequeath to the Eldest Daughter of William Christie Esq. Of London one hundred pounds Sterling. To Thomas Bruce son of Doctor Henry Bruce fifty pounds Sterling. To my sister Elizabeth ten pounds Sterling annully for ten years, but not to be continued to her heirs should she die before the Experation of that period. To Betsy Rolley for her kind attention to my mulatoe Children fifteen Joes? I will and bequeath her. To each of the before named Executors in Tobago I bequeath Ten Joes (or Toes?) for mourning pin or ring. I am prevented from making many other bequeaths being uncertain how my affairs may turn out after my decease. The money arising from the Sale of my Slaves, medicines, Horses- Houses & two Lots of ground in milford and all debts due me or may be due me in Tobago or else where I wish the neet Proceeds may be remitted to my nephew John before mentioned first having settled all my Just debts in Tobago my Mulattoe Children Jean & Betsy I request may be sent to Dundee and put Under the guardianship of my before mentioned nephews John Guild William Guild George Guild who I trust will have them carefully brought up and taught some business and it is my will that when they are judged of proper age and thought qualified that they may have one Hundred and fifty pounds Ster’g/ each to set them up in business. The interest of the money which is expected to be remitted I hope will be sufficient to bring them up~ but in case of the death of either one or both then, the legacies I wish may be divided with all sums due to me in following manner, one half I bequeath to my nephew John & the other half betwixed his brothers William and George on no act. are the before mentioned mulattoe Children to return to the West Indies – This will renders all former wills null, void and of no Effect ~
