SIMMONS:  I am looking for the Parents, or Siblings of Lebbeus Simmons who was born August 28, 1849 at Middleborough, Plymouth Co., MA.  He married Mary Douglas there on Jan 27, 1774.  He was a Rev War Vet who enlisted at Middleborough, and was discharged there as well.  But later he settled permanently in Maine.  Researchers of this man, have studied his Rev War files, and other documents, and have NEVER been able to find a FATHER listed for him, or a sibling group.
Lebbeus Simmons settled in Maine at the same time, and in a similar location as ICHABOD Simmons.  I do NOT know if they are related?  If you are studying Ichabod, or have any knowledge of Lebbeus Simmons b. 1749 MA, d. 13 Mar 1835 Troy, Waldo Co Maine, please write back.

There is a group of descendant researchers of this man and his children who have been looking at all known records for many years, hoping to uncover a line on his own ancestry. The father of this man is UNKNOWN to date.

Those of you studying the Simmons families of Middleborough, Plymouth Co. MA in the 1740 thru 1830 time frame, please check your files for Lebbeus.

1810 census at 25 Mile Plantation , Kennebec Co ME

1820 census at Joy, Kennebec Co ME

The name Lebbeus is strange, but it is a Bible name.  Sometimes spelled Libbeous, and variations.  There is mention of Lebbeus in many genealogical books, but so far no father mentioned.  This info may be still cloaked in mystery, we may be looking for undiscovered information.  All the common places have been checked.  His 3 sons moved to Mercer Co., PA, but some of his married daughters remained in ME. This family lived near Unity Pond.  Reply to:  Lillian Kathleen Martin  7 May 04

SIMMONS: - One relative, in his own handwriting, claims his birth in "East Bangor, Penobscot Co., Maine" on 3 Oct 1820; named Nathaniel Simmons. Census records show Lincoln County and, later, Waldo County, as having the only Nathaniel Simmons in Maine (1800-90). We know only that he probably left Maine before 1842, possibly with his widowed mother, and went west. My father recalls stories of Nathaniel walking along a levee and doing boat work in exchange for his mother's passage. He married Harriet Chandler Hammond (22 Feb 1820 - 27 Jun 1892 in Muskingum, Ohio. Only two of their seven children survived to adulthood; Ira Rollins and Alonzo Campbell. SMITH:  In checking your wonderful map collection, I find a Mrs. Smith on the north end of St. George Pond, Liberty.  I am trying to find a Smith family.  My great-grandfather was Charles E. Smith.  The Bangor death certificate for Charles E. Smith lists his father as Jacob and mother unknown. He was born in 1841.  I found a 9 year old Charles E. Smith living in Bangor with a Hill family in 1850.  My family story says that Charles was adopted.  A possible story may go that Charles' mother died when he was very young and he was taken by the Hill family.  In that time adoptions were not always formalized.  There may be a family connection between the Hill and Smith families.  Charles married first, Mary Jones and second, Rose Allen.  He is buried with Mary in Pine Grove Cemetery in Bangor. What I would like is contact with someone who is doing work on the Smith family of Liberty and Bangor.  Smith is such a common name but researches seem far and few between.  Is there a connection between the Smith family of Liberty and Orrington?  Reply to:  Harry Hurlbert  27 Sep 06

SMITH:  I'm trying to trace my ancestry through the Smith line which is a challenge to say the least. My great, great grandfather was Percy Earnest Smith. He was born in E. Knox in Waldo county, Maine in 1876. He later settled through Boston and finally on Cape Cod. He married Ellen Pearl Conner who immigrated from Ireland and arrived here in 1901.

I've found Percy on the 1880 census for Knox, Maine. He is listed as the grandson of Abner F. Smith (1821 - 1899) and Mary C Smith. Most of the people on that census are Abner's children from 2 different marriages. There are two people on the list that could potentially be Percy's parent. The first is Abner S Smith, listed on the census as being 27 years old. The other is Rosanna Smith listed on the census as being 31 years old.

If anyone has any info on this line and might be able to tell me which one is Percy's parent, I'd appreciate it. Also, if anyone has any info on Abner F. Smith and his ancestors before him, I'd love to hear from you.  Reply to: Chris 22 Sep 05

SNOW:  Aaron Snow - I tried to e-mail a response to the "Snow" Query by Guy Sanderson dated 31 Dec. 2007, but his e-mail address has changed. Please post the following: In my search for Aaron Snow, I came across your post dated 31 Dec. 2007. I'm researching an Aaron Snow, son of Ebenezer and Mary (Chipman) Snow of Eastham, Massachusetts. From the information that I have, he was born in Eastham, MA on November 10, 1759 and died in Chatham, MA in 1852.  I found the following online as well, which leads me to believe that he may be the same person you are researching:

Mr. Aaron Snow, from Cape Cod, MA moved to Gorham, ME and then to Monroe about 1802. He also took advantage of the water power of Marsh Stream and built a grist mill at the falls in Monroe Village. Mr. Snow sold his grist mill to Broadstreet Mason. Mr. Snow then moved a few miles to western Monroe and began farming. He worked for Mr. Mason while he was establishing his farm. http://www.townofmonroeme.net/id3.html

What information do you have concerning his wife and children, etc.?  If this is one and the same, then it would stand to reason why he went to Gorham, ME as his mother had a Chipman cousin who had moved there as well.

SNOW:  One of the earliest settlers in the area that was to become the town of Monroe was a man by the name of Aaron Snow.  He moved to Monroe from Gorham, ME about 1802 with his wife and young children.  He reportedly built a grist mill on the Marsh Stream in Monroe Village which he later sold to Broadstreet Mason.  He then moved to western Monroe and started farming.  He is listed on the 1810 census with his wife, 3 boys and 3 girls.  He does not appear on later censuses for the town of Monroe.  Does anyone know what happened to this family?   Reply to: Guy Sanderson  31 Dec 07

Sarah died 18 June 1865 in Frankfort. Someone has suggested that she might have been a Nickerson? Possibly the daughter of Jonathan  Nickerson and Priscilla Hopkins. The Nickerson book said that she had married an Anthony Peraro (intentions 24 Oct 1812) Sarah seems to have had a daughter, Olive, prior to her marriage to Prince. Olive would marry a Foss. I am chasing the Sprague line out of Swan's Island, including the towns of St George, Union, Lincolnville, Islesboro and Thomaston (and possibly Waldoboro, Damariscotta, etc) I thought James was from Union, but he listed his residence as Lincolnville, so now I'm lost. Any insight would be great, and as always, I'm always willing to share my info.  Reply to: Anne Gabel 14 Apr 05

SPRAGUE: Looking for descendants of the John Sprague family of Islesboro, we only know of one James T. who married a Mrs. Hewett and went to Swan Island. His wife is also unknown, were there more siblings? Any other descendants of the Block Island families there such as Trim, Dodge, Grinell, are also needed. Reply to: Jeff Howe 30 Jan 02

SPRAGUE:  In the 1930 census for Searsport, Osmond B. George and wife, Leona Evelyn Sprague, are living with Osmond's father, William, and Leona's mother, Maud C. Sprague. Also six children - Gladys, Velma, Blanche, Glenis, Eunice and Edna. Apparently, no sons, at least as of 1930. I'm trying to follow the Sprague line back from Maud C. Sprague, who is 42 in 1930 so was born abt 1888.  Leona Evelyn Sprague lived 1906 - 1964. Would anyone know of a source of obits for this family? Especially for Maud C. Sprague as I would like to know who was her father.  Reply to: Russ Sprague  7 Jul 06

STEWART:  My 2nd great-grandfather served in 26th Maine Infantry mustered out in Montville in 1862.  His pension records show Montville as does 1890 census.  My grandfather, Loren P. Stewart, was born in Montville, 27 June 1892. After college graduation went into military.  Enlistment data shows Thorndike, Maine.  Liberty, Maine also mentioned in family papers.  My father had to help his mother settle some estate matter in Waldo county in the early 50's.  Sold a farm, but I don't know in whose name that had been.
My father was Loren Francis Stewart who attended U. of Maine, Bangor.  Graduated 1942. Served in Army from graduation to date of death. Buried in El Paso, Texas in 1968.  His father, Loren Prescott Stewart, also U. of Maine taught ROTC at Bangor.  Died in the Pacific Theatre of Operations in the Philippines where he is interred.  His father, Edwin L. STOCKTON SPRINGS BOARDING HOUSE: My Waldo County inquiry is in regard to a boarding house in Stockton Springs, Maine that existed sometime around 1890, 1900, 1910. I believe it was owned by the family of Clara/Clarinda P. Wascott, who was born in Winterport, Maine in 1850. At some point she married a Frank G. Lancaster as the couple appear in the 1890 city directory for Chelsea, Massachusetts.
Frank died shortly after 1900, and Clara, along with the couple's adopted son, Manley, went back to live in the area where Clara was born. Clara Lancaster, and her son, Manley, show up on the 1910 census for Stockton Springs, Waldo County, Maine.
Manley's sister, Mary Rose DeSilva (born 1888 in Boston, Massachusetts) went to work at the aforementioned boarding house. It was there that she met, and eventually married George Frederick Gaines, who was born in 1876 in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. He was apparently working for the railroad and staying at the boarding house.
Can anyone provide any details insofar as family ownership, location, etc., of the aforementioned boarding house? Reply to: BCorreia615@aol.com 19 Feb 04

STUDIO OF EASTERN ILLUSTRATING COMPANY, BELFAST, ME:  I am currently working on a history project about the people and places within the Town of Nichols, Tioga County, NY.  Among several old photograph post cards loaned to me for use in the project, there is a stamp embedded on the reverse side of many of them which states the name of the company who made them: Studio of Eastern Illustrating Company, Belfast, ME .
From all indications, these photo post cards were taken sometime in the early 1900's - probably 1905-1915 time period.
I would be most appreciative of any information regarding this photo studio (i.e. dates of operation, owner, etc) and if the old records from this company might be stored or owned by another studio or perhaps historical society.

SWEETSER:  I am interested in John Sweetser of Prospect Maine. He had 2 known children one Catherine Sweetser, b. 1766 who married William McLaughlin. The other is Joseph,  b. about 1772.  In 1772,  John Sweetser  was conveyed by Col Thomas Goldthwait, 100 acres fronting easterly on Penobscot river in the Frankfort Plantation. The author cited Vol. 8 Linclon Deeds. Does anyone have more information on this family? Where did they come from? SYLVESTER:  I am seeking information on a Charity Sylvester, who I believe may have been born around 1791. She married Tilden Thomas (b. 22 Feb 1786) of Islesboro in 1809, and they had a daughter Mary B. Thomas, (b. 13 Nov 1813) who married Hezekiah Flanders of Northport.   Their daughter, Mary O. Flanders, (b. 17 Mar 1844) married Walter Wellington Dodge in 1881.  Their daughter Ethel R. Dodge, (b. Apr 1844 in Northport, d. 27 Mar 1919) married William Henry Dyer in 1902.  Ethel and William were my maternal grandparents.  I have not been able to determine Charity Sylvester's parentage.  I would appreciate any information that anyone might be able to offer.
I have found some information that has helped me to trace the
Sylvester line back from Charity, assuming she was the daughter of Philip and Mary (Gooch) Sylvester.  However, there is some question in my mind, as I have not personally found any listing of their children that includes Charity.  Her name itself makes sense, as there were a number of her forebears with that name.  Also, I have found some information that tells me that while Philip and Mary (Molley) filed "Intentions" to marry in Braintree, MA, on May 6, 1769; I have no marriage date.  I also saw in another source that Mary was born in 1752 and died in 1770, thus calling into question whether or not she was Charity's mother.  I would appreciate any information that anyone might be able to offer on either Charity Sylvester or Mary Gooch.

Family legend has it George Edward Taylor brought the use of the baseball glove from the East to West Coast and was originally from a Coast Shipping Family in Maine. We know no more about his background as his son, William Marion Taylor, was only 7 years old when his father died.  We are interested in learning the names of his parents and any other information.

A successful baseball player in his short life, he was known as "Live Taylor" and/or Live Eddy Taylor, and played on a number of amateur and professional baseball teams over about 18 years from East to West Coasts, including "In Centennial year 1876, the Athletic Baseball Team of San Francisco took a trip around the Western States."  He was active in the 1880's in the California League Teams.  An article on early baseball history states "'Live' Taylor and Jim McDonald went to the Alleghany [sic] team, which later became the Pittsburg team.  Both men made brilliant records there, returning to California where they played with local teams for several years."  Reply to: T. THOMPSON: I have information from my family that my 3rd great grandfather was a sea captain in Searsport in the early 1800's.  His name was Robert Thompson, and I have records of his marriage to Eliza Stowers in Belfast  on 14 Jul, 1805, and later married Theodosia Staples in Prospect in 1810.  My family records indicate that he had 10 children with Theodosia, although I don't have names or dates of birth (Other than my Great Great Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth (Thompson) (Rand).  If you could confirm that he was indeed a Captain in or around Searsport in the early 1800's and any other data, I would really appreciate it!  Or just point me in the right direction.

TREAT CEMETERY:  To the caretaker(s) of the Treat Cemetery in Frankfort, I post the following message I received, "I was so impressed with the care that has been taken of the cemetery.  There were obviously new veteran's flags at each of the Revolutionary and Civil War veterans' headstones. It meant a great deal to me to find my ancestors' resting place in such wonderful condition -- I have been to other old cemeteries that are sorely neglected. Treat Point is a very small cemetery, with only Treat and Peirce graves, and I would love to be able to thank whoever takes the time to maintain it. If you know who does, I'd appreciate you passing this on, or perhaps putting it in your news section, or letting me know who to contact.  Signed: Holly Peirce Azevedo  15 Feb '10

WEBB:  I would like to extend my Webb line back in time if possible. My records suggest she was one year old at the time of the 1790 Maine Census so I suspect one of the heads of household there would be her father. But there are a lot of choices.
I do not know where Betsy was born. But her husband John was born in Winthrop and was listed there in the 1790 census. John Mitchell's younger brother was married in Troy c1809. And the first confirmation that John and Betsy lived in Troy is the birth of their daughter Harriet in Troy in 1813. The net of this is that I am not certain where Betsy was born and where her family came from. But it seems likely that she came from a town near either Winthrop or Troy.

Welch / Welsh: I hope you can help and realizing that this is just a shot in the dark. Query:  Was there a John Welch/Welsh who was a sea captain in Maine between 1800 and 1822/1824?
Background information in case it might help you:
John
Welch/Welsh, b. 30 Oct 1784, Lunenburg, MA;  d. 1846 in Geauga Co. Ohio; s/o Jacob Welch/Welsh of Boston & Lunenburg, MA & Elizabeth Gordon of Dunstable MA.
Jacob
Welch/Welsh was sent in 1810 to Geauga Co. OH by his father, John Welch/Welsh, a Boston silversmith to manage the approx 3,000 of acres that he (John Welch/Welsh) bought in the Western Reserve via the Connecticut Land Company.
Jacob
died in 1822 in Geauga, and the Ohio histories all record that Jacob's son, John Welch/Welsh, who was a sea captain, gave up his profession and went to Ohio to take over his father's property. John Welch/Welsh had a daughter, Mary Parker Welsh, who lists her birthplace as Maine in all census records. The only record that I have been able to find for a John Welch/Welsh on the sea with Boston connections was the John Welsh who was the prize master of the sloop Prince Neuchatel during the War of 1812 which was captured by the British and the crew was held in Dartmoor prison.  In the Dartmoor prison records  John Welsh cites his birth place as Boston and it is known that he did return to the US following the War of 1812.  I'm hoping that if you have a record of a sea captain named John Welch/Welch that it will at least give me a location in Maine to begin a search for the family.   Reply to: Kathie McCutcheon-Gawne  20 Jun '10

WENTWORTH: Hattie Viola Gilson was born in 1861 in Boston, MA to Susan Whittmore Wentworth and Mr. (I think his name starts with an A but I have no notes so I don't know how I came to that) Gilson. Susan was born in Waldo, ME although Susan came West, Hattie being born in Boston was my first knowledge of her being in Boston. Hattie had 3 siblings (all brothers I believe) according to the 1900 San Francisco, CA census where Susan is listed as widowed having four children, none living. Susan is the daughter of  Jesse Wentworth and Lydia B. Hilt. Hattie died Dec 1885 and is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery which is in Bird's Landing, Solano County, CA. WHIPPLE/BATCHELDER:  I'm working on a brick wall of my mother's - the Whipple/Batchelder lines .
Polly Whipple,
b. very approximately 1786 in Waldo ME m. Nathan Batcheldor (b 1784, Deerfield NH d. Palermo ME) very approximately 1804 Maine.  He was the son of Deacon Nathan Batchelder (b 1747, Hampton, NH d ME, apparently moved after the Revolutionary War) and ??? Taylor.  He also married a woman named Bryant, but his 5 children (Nathaniel, John Taylor (m Betsy Bradbury), Nathan (of m. to Polly fame), Simon, and Betsey (m. Albert Cargill)) were by Ms. Taylor.
Nathan
and Polly had 8 children that I know of:  Sally, Eliza, Taylor, Cyrus, Mary, RuelLousia Flavella and James Gardner, in that order except possibly for James GardnerLouisa Flavella is my ancestor.  I have a copy of her death certificate listing Polly and Nathan as her parents.  She was b. c 1820 (either Waldo or Palermo, I suspect the Waldo is the county designation) and d. 1905 in Portland.
I can find ***nothing*** about a Whipple in the area and nothing about Flavella's (I've seen her name listed by others as Flavella Louise) siblings.  I've been to Augusta, but the family records seem to have been destroyed in a town hall fire.
Does anyone know anything about these families - have you stumbled across them in a cemetery?  I'd love to have some help and do plan to visit the area during the summer.  Are there cemeteries that are most likely?  Is there a local place where record copies might exist (yes, I know that copies would probably be in Augusta if that were the case, but I find it strange that I can't find anything about these people).
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your attention, even if it's just smiles recognizing the situation.

WILKINS: I am looking for any information at all about Edward Wilkins and Samuel Wilkins who were reported to have been living in "Maine" in the 1700's.    I am trying to find out if Edward could have been the father of Samuel.
Edward was probably born in the 1750's (where?) as he was reported to have been a Revolutionary War Soldier - from "Maine."
Samuel was probably born in the 1770's in "Maine."    They both seem to have been living in the same towns in the Unity and Vassalboro part of "Maine." Samuel Wilkins married Electa or Lecta _____ in the same area in ~1800, and they had five children born there between 1800 and 1815. Reply to: Betty Fredericks 21 Dec 03

WILKINS:  I'd like to know if anyone has books on the history of Unity, ME, and could do a look-up for me?  I am looking for any information at all about the Wilkins surname.
It is my understanding that at least four Wilkins men moved to "Maine" in the 1770's.    The one I am most interested in is William Wilkins.  He reportedly lived in Unity, Vassalborough, and Pittston, and he might have moved around to other towns.  (I think someone told me he was a Surveyor.)  I know he lived in that area from ~1770 to close to 1800, but he does not show up in the 1790 Census.
He was a Revolutionary War Soldier from Pittston, so he might have died in the War.    If he did, or if he was seriously injured and died soon after the War ended,  then there should be a grave for him someplace.
I am looking to find out if William Wilkins was married and had children.  I am trying to find out if he could have been the father of Samuel Wilkins who was reportedly born in the Unity and Vassalborough area in the 1770's.
Also, Samuel Wilkins probably married in the same area around 1800.   His wife was Electra "Leeta" _____.    They are listed in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 Censuses for Unity, ME.  They either had five or six children in Unity (or any neighboring town).
Just after 1830 they moved to Amity, ME.    Four of their children moved to Amity with them:  Samuel, Jr., Almon, Mary Jane, and George Freeman.  I don't know what happened to another daughter, possibly named, Elizabeth or Electra.
Two other Wilkins men were in "Maine" in the 1770's.  Both Edward and Joseph Wilkins served in the Revolutionary War.  I have nothing else on Joseph.  However, Edward Wilkins was listed in the 1800 Census  "in a township back of Bangor."  (arriving after 1790)   And, he was listed as being married with two young children.  Someone told me that he is buried in Charleston, ME, and pension information had him also in nearby Exeter.
There is a small possibility that all four Wilkins men were from MA, and possibly from Middleton, MA - where the Wilkins patriarch lived.   I have no idea whether the four men were related, but they could have been.
I don't know whether they went to "Maine" at different times, or whether they all moved up there around 1770 - prior to the War.  By 1820, several more Wilkins families had moved to Maine.   Reply to:  Betty  8 May 04

I would like to get this back into the hands of the nearest Woodbury relative. The family came from Monroe. I am looking for someone who is directly related. I have put this out on the Woodbury website and have used Larry Wert’s Woodbury/Ober website to find the nearest line. I have had a couple of people email me to see if they matched my information but nothing matched. There may be someone who reads these inquiries or a Woodbury in Waldo county that would possibly be related.  This New Testament is no great prize as it is very worn, scribbled in as a child might have done and in general bad shape. However. it does have an inscription from the giver to the recipient dated 1859.

YOUNG: Levi Young -   researching a long ago great grandfather, Captain Levi Young. His father and grandfather shared the same name. The grandfather may have also gone to sea. Levi Young III was born in 1800, in New Vineyard Maine. I did locate all three Levi's in New Vineyard just after the birth of Levi III. He did achieve his masters as a sea captain and sailed out of Boston with Captain Dominis. He seemed to have frequented the fur trade, or the northwest coast of our continent. Up the Vancouver, over to Hawaii, down to California and back to Boston. He seemed to have sailed for the same owners as those of Captain Dominis. Levi married Jane Dauphin Jackson in 1835 and he gave up the sea a few years later. He moved to Peoria Illinois and died there at the age of forty-five, in 1845. His grave appropriately has been lost on land.  I was wondering if any information about either Levi III or his grandfather may have shown up on any lists you may have encountered. Any information about the Young family they are part of  would be appreciated. My family has the Smiths, Jackson's, Young's, Frank's. They all were here very early on, but the common names are making it a challenge to find the correct one's. Most were born in the East and some migrated to the Midwest. Thank you.  Reply to: Carol  26 Jan 2011

YOUNG:  Is there any applicable information on the "Young" listed in the Searsport Sea Captains document that might connect with my great-grandfather, John W. Young, born in Lincolnville, ME in 1818.  He was a fisherman.  He was married to Lydia E. Richards. Reply to: Arlene (Young) Russell 14 Apr 05

YOUNG: I am looking for information on Samuel Young's career in war of 1812. Going on very sketchy information that he (one of my great great great grandfathers) may have so served. Not sure.  His lovely (not) wife was Lydia. (A sterner looking woman would be hard to find!) I have pictures of each and a note written that he had been a Captain in that conflict.
