Biographies and Photos of Carroll County Ancestor

CARROLLTON, MISS.

Oliver Abbot Shaw, SR. HOME

submitted by Paul H. Shaw, August 21 2006

I'm attaching a photo you might want to run in your historical photo section. It is of a home which still stands on Summitt Street in Winona, and is currently Lee Funeral Home. Prior to 1921, it was the home of Oliver Abbot Shaw, sr., of Carrollton, son of Hobart Doane Shaw, Sr. He was Superintendent of Schools in Winona for 25 years before he left for a job as Dean of Education at Ole Miss.

I would love to learn more about this home - its builder and other occupants. If anyone knows anything about it, perhaps they will write your web site. Relatives in town don't have any information on the house. There is conjecture that it was built by Winona founder, Col. Moore, but that is a guess. The photo was taken before 1921, after a snow. The trees and hedgerow have since disappeared, although the hedge did exist until recently.

Thanks,
Paul Shaw
