Note:
Male
and female teachers were not paid on the same pay scale, and pay varied from
month to month. Usually there were 20 days taught each month, 4 months to
a term. Enrollment dropped drastically.. i.e. Bellefontaine"s (1st on the
list) beginning enrollment was 52 boys & 49 girls, total 101 students.
Its ending enrollment was 30 boys & 35 girls, total 65 students. This
was typical of all schools except when the School Board of Directors made the
decision to discontinue a school and consolidate it with another or establish a
new school. This sometimes happened in the middle of a school
term.
Since pupils had to
travel by foot, wagon, mule, or horse the Board tried to establish neighborhood
schools for their convenience. Many of the school buildings were built by
the parents at their own expense.
Minutes of the School Board of Directors:
"Walthall Mif. Sept. 5th 1890. The
Board met pusuant to adjounrment. The member from Beat ..., to wit: J. A.
May being absent, upon the written suggestion of G. W. Collins Prest. of the Bd.
of Supervisors of whole County Wm ElbertStrickland upon nomination of the Wm.
Griffin was unanimously elected by the Board as a member.
The petition of W. P. Conner, W. D. Avent, Et al, to
consolidate the two Public Free schools of Fame and Spring Creek schools upon
motion was granted and it is hereby ordered by the board that the patrons of
said school build the school house without expense to the County. Said
school house be located in or about the N.E. corner of the NW1/4 of Sec 33
Township 21 R11E. Ayes unanimous. Said school to be called
Union.
Minutes of School Board meeting, Sept 1890,
continued
Ordered that the order of
the board at the meeting on the 1st Monday in August 1890 same being the 4 day,
doing away with the Philley"s school and locating the same at Tomnolen, be and
the same is hereby rescinded and the Philley"s school is hereby
reinstated. Ayes unanimous.
Ordered that the petition of J. G. White Et al to locate a school near County
Line Church that is to say on or near the line of Sections 6 & 7 T20 R12 1/2
mile south of said County Line Church. The patrons of said school to build
the school House without expense to the County.
All buildings were built of frame, school term was four months with 20 teaching days each month unless otherwise noted. When the assistant teacher taught, the regular teacher was not paid. The enrollment didn"t change much, but the attendance was scanty.
