Adams County North Dakota History


Established 13 Mar 1885, organized on 17 April 1907 by official proclamation of Gov. John Burke from the southern portion of Hettinger County. Named for John Quincy Adams (1848-1919), General Land and Townsite Agent for Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul RR., whose main line to the Pacific Coast was built through southwestern North Dakota during 1906-1907. Distant relative of President of same name.
Government organized: April 24, 1907.
County Seat: Hettinger, 1907 to present.
Area 989 square miles.
2000 population -- 2593.
