DANIEL MANNING

The city of Manning, Dunn County, North Dakota was named after Daniel Manning. Daniel was a large rancher and businessman living just a short distance away in the Dickinson area [Township 152, Range 96] and could very well have been part of Dunn County at one time but not clear because of all the county line changes the state was doing. Daniel was the first mayor of Dickinson.
Daniel was born in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois on 2 July 1845.
On 29 July 1861, Daniel enlisted for the Civil War indicating his residence as Dundee, Kane County. He served until his discharge on 2 July 1865. He was a Private in Company I of the 52nd Illinois Infantry Regiment.
In 1878 he is in Dakota Territory, married, and one child. On 15 July 1879 Daniel married Catherine "Kate" Donnelly who was born in Canada. The family lived in various places in Dakota Territory before settling down in the Dickinson area. In the 1900 Census, Kate indicated that she had five children but only two survived. They had none after that. Three of the children were William "Willie", Birney, and Gervase.

HENRY HELGE MYRAN

Henry was born to Helge and Torbjor Haugeberg Myran in Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa [Note: Records indicate "Little Iowa Norsk-evangelisk Lutherske Menighed, Winneshiek, Iowa" which is not found today but another record indicates "Decorah,"]. Henry married Ragnild (Laura, Rachel) Rue on 25 June 1885 in Winneshiek County, Iowa [records indicate "Madison Church," probably a church in Madison Township]. Rachel was born on 23 September 1866 in Lincoln Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa on 14 December 1859 to Ole and Berget Halvorson Rue. The ancestry of both Henry and Rachel is Norwegian.
Records show family in both Stark and Dunn counties as a result of country boundary changes by the state affecting the Township 141, Range 93. The Myran family was in Section 12. Henry was granted his land patent in 1896 which means he probably homesteaded as early as 1891. In the census Henry is called both a farmer and a stockraiser. Ole gets married in 1916 to Nellie Knutson and they obtain a farm in Township 142, Range 92, Section 23 and Lars gets married in 1917 to Esther Anderson and they have a farm in Township 141, Range 93, Section 12 but separate from the farm of his folks. Theodore remained single and on his parents farm. Some records seem to indicate that Township 141, Range 93 was named Myran Township.
In 1941, Tilda married Jalmer Anderson. Jalmar was born in Sweden and in 1930 was living on the Myran farm and in 1940 has his own farm in Section 32 of Myran Township.
Henry Myran's family was very active in their community having played a large part in school, church, cemetery, and community efforts.

The above article is a focus on the Dunn County Henry Myran family although there are other Myrans living in the area. There may be a relationship with them all but was difficult for this writer to discern. Below is a link to information that came from the 1970 Dauntless Dunn by an unknown writer created from pages 243 and 244. It also has some photos.
