 John was born to Isaac and Lucinthia Northrop on 3 April 1839 in Camden, Oneida County, New York. John had at least these siblings; Hannah (1827), Mary (1831), Lucinthia (1835), Thomas (1837), Henry (1844), and Orson (1847).
John was an adventurer seeking gold in Colorado and California, farming in Oregon, ranching in Montana before settling down in Minnesota with his brother Orson in the late 1800's. Both John and Orson pioneered in Dunn County in the very early 1900's with Orson getting a land patent in Sections 15 and 22 of Township 145, Range 96, sometimes called Richloam Township.
For several years John was the postmaster for the Northrop Post Office. Orson returned to Minnesota shortly after John's death in 1917.
The 1900 and 1910 census reports indicate John as a widower but this writer could find no record of his wife.
