The SE Quarter of Section 24 in Township 143 N, Range 95 W
Emerson Cemetery is easy to get to and very well marked. It is 3 miles south of Manning, ND
on Hwy 22 and 5.75 miles east on 16th Street. It is fenced with a large, clearly visible
sign over the gate. This cemetery had not been mowed and was not well maintained. However,
there is much evidence that this cemetery is visited often by all the artificial flowers
decorating the sites.
Emerson (formerly Connolly) became a town when Dunn County was organized and vied for the
County seat but lost out to Manning. The town flourished until the railroad line was built
from Bismarck to Killdeer. By 1917 most of the businesses had moved from Emerson to the
towns along the railroad line. Today nothing remains of Emerson. (From Dauntless Dunn II -
1989 A History of Dunn County North Dakota pages 64 and 65.)
This list was created only from the tombstone transcriptions and is not complete. There is
some evidence of possible missing markers on some sites. As of 12/11/2002, there are 56
visible markers.
